Hotel Monaco

Is it in a safe area, or should we think about another hotel?

There are Hotel Monacos in a number of cities. Which one are you curious about?

If New Orleans Oct 13th, 2002 06:21 PM

The Hotel Monaco in New Orleans is located on St. Charles in the Central Business District ( CBD ). It is a safe area but I wouldn't be walking around at 3 AM.

I just stayed there and took a cab into the French Quarter in the evening to a restaurant. We then walked around in the quarter, went to a few clubs and then got a cab to bring us back. Cab costs 5 - 10 bucks with tip.

Sorry, you guys..I guess you can't read my mind..I MEANT the Monaco in San Francisco.

The Hotel Monaco is located in Union Square which can be a rough area of the city. I would advise looking into another location. Do you have any other places in mind?

Did you see this very recent thread?

http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessages.jsp?fid=1&tid=34370978

(just discount the tired, fallacious posts by Mona the Union Square hater)

Union Square area is safe, urban, happening, exciting and conveniently located for all transportation modes (but having an auto is a hassle).

Ben, For one thing I am Barb and not Mona. You know, it is possible for more than one person to have the same opinion on a particular issue. With that said, I live in the city and as such I have a good idea of the areas to avoid. I find it irresponsible of you to advise a visitor to stay in an area that is potentially dangerous.

I stayed at the Hotel Monaco a couple of years ago and found the area to be fine, though going west of the hotel the area gets a little iffy. As far as Union Square, I have never felt of it as an unsafe area.

And, by the way, that last 'Barb' reply was NOT me! And thanks for all the honest feedback, I'm from back east, the hotel looks really cool and I'm just double checking. So thanks.
