Hotel locations for Olympic peninsula
We want to reserve a hotel for the summer for 3 nights in olympic peninsula. We didn't do any planning so far and were just wondering which towns will be a goog "base" for exploring the area. The only town we know of is port angeles. Do you think it is a good idea to stay in a couple of towns in order to reduce driving?

Lake Crescent Lodge is well located for seeing the park and it has a beautiful setting.
A good plan is to drive the park clockwise, spending the first night in Quinault Lake Lodge and the second and third nights at Lake Crescent Lodge.
The hotels in Port Angeles (and more so in Forks) are uninspiring, except for the Best Western Olympic Lodge in a room facing the golf course (but the BW location is on the west fringe of the park).

1st right turn over
Hood Canal bridge. Salt water park access, beautiful views Olympic mountains,on the water, nearby small restaurants or if want too eat al fresco with watr views on teh deck.
Positioned nicely to explore Port Gamble (nice litle town with shell museum, loggers museum summer farmers market berries are great) nearby forest hikes, play on teh beach park, watch teh boats go thru the bridge.
about an hour to Port Angeles, Sequim, Port Townsend, Olympic National Park etc..

I second Happytrailstoyou's suggestion of doing one night at Lk Quinault and 2 nights at Lk Crescent, although depending on when you're going, you may have trouble getting reservations at this point (those places tend to book up well in advance).
I like Pt Ludlow (especially the Inn there as opposed to the condos) but IMO it's too far east to be a good base for exploring the national park.

We spent three days exploring ONP and were based out of Sequim. We had no problem with the driving distances but we only visited the Sol Duc area, Hurricane Ridge, and Lake Crescent. Did plenty of hiking and then enjoyed dinner back in Port Angeles or Sequim. That was just perfect for a three-day trip.
