Hotel in St. Augustine
I'm taking my mother to St. Augustine in early Feb 2009. I'm looking for a a nice (as in clean, safe but not necessarily high-end) hotel within walking distance of the old town. I was THIS close to settling on the St. George Inn but it seems that the rooms with 2 beds are on 3rd floor & i'm not crazy about that hike for my 70+ year old (very active, but really) mother, not to mention my knees. Can someone recommend a good hotel in the area in the neighborhood of $150/night? I was hoping to keep it under $100 but it's looking unlikely... I'd also be happy to hear up to date "favorite" restaurants. Thanks!

Old City House <http://www.oldcityhouse.com/> is just what you are looking for. You can get a room there for no more than $150/night, particularly during the middle of a week rather than on the weekends. It has a superb location and they serve outstanding meals in their restaurant.
As to restaurant recommendations, what are your preferences and price ranges? |
As far as restaurants -- i'm really looking for FRESH food (not so much the fried and as my coworker says "cooked until it's good & dead" food). I'm really trying to eat healthy these days. I wouldn't mind paying $15-20 for an entree occasionally, but would be very interested in less expensive (need to scale back here a bit) restaurants as well.
The Old City House looks great -- i could probably rationalize the price (however we will be staying Thursday-Saturday nights) but do they have rooms with 2 beds? That would work best for us. I would also prefer to find a place that does have a frig -- i'll probably bring some of my granola & soy milk for breakfasts. |
Sometimes I feel like Orlando Vic's echo: but add my vote to his recommendation. The Old City House is not only a great place to stay, perfect location. But it is also an excellent place to dine.
I recommend for at least one lunch you go to the Cafe Alcazar across the street from the Old City House. You would also enjoy the Manatee Cafe, but will need to drive or cab it. Have fun. It is a great town. |
Hi PattyAnn25-
Here is some good news for guests at Old City House. B&B guests receive a free breakfast with each night’s stay http://www.oldcityhouse.com/menubk11...<>...and it is a very good breakfast too. There is no need to rely on granola & soy milk for breakfasts when they offer a real treat each morning! Cmcfong share so many of the same restaurant preferences in St. Augustine, I’m surprised I haven’t bumped into him before at a meal somewhere. Café Alcazar is my favorite restaurant for lunch and it is literally only a few steps away from Old City House. Don’t miss it! If you want FRESH cuisine, try Gypsy Cab Co. <http://www.gypsycab.com/> just across the Bridge of Lyons (on Anastasia Island). Their early bird menu is well within your price range and is a good value. Find out if it is still offered during the winter months. Another good place is Mango Mango’s on A1A in St. Augustine Beach. It is neither haute cuisine nor is it fancy, but the menu is creative and the food is fresh and tasty. You will need your car for both. |
I checked the Old City House website and it says the rooms all have queen beds, but an extra bed can be placed in the room for $25 charge. I would suggest calling them and seeing what they can arrange for you. The free breakfast, wine and cheese hours, free bikes, plus the great location really do make it an appealing choice.
Again ditto to Vic's suggestion of the Gypsy Cab Co. Their early bird specials are well within your price range. I hope you have a wonderful visit. |
