Hotel in Reno

We are going to a workshop in Incline Village and will be arriving in the evening in Reno. We would like to stay the night in Reno and check it out the following day before going to Incline Village. We hope to stay somewhere that is easy to get around, as we will probably depend on Uber or cabs while there. What area/hotel would you recommend? We've never been to either place, and we have a hotel near the workshop, so this is specific to Reno, and an easier trip to IV.
Thanks for any and all suggestions!

Depends. If you want to stay downtown in the old gambling area, the the Silver Legacy or El Dorado. A little further is the Peppermill. We stayed there while attending a wedding and it was very nice. The only place we will stay in the future.

MichelleY,
I'm not at all familiar with the areas in Reno, so any first hand knowledge is good. I'll check these out, thanks!

My choisec would be Peppermill or Atlantis south of town, or harrah's or El Dorado in downtown.

When is this trip? Getting to Incline could be a problem if there is a winter storm. The lowest altitude route would be south from Reno to Carson city and across on Hwy 50 then north around the east side of the Lake to Incline.

Yes. When is this trip?

JADSJBD Feb 20th, 2017 08:17 AM

The trip is late June, so hopefully the weather will be mild. I just don't know if I should stay in a particular area with respect to getting to Incline.

janisj Feb 20th, 2017 08:34 AM

Oh - in June, I'd stay south of town (Peppermill etc) and take the Mt Rose road right into Inclune Village.

MichelleY Feb 20th, 2017 10:56 AM

How late are you getting in? If it is before sundown, I would head straight to Incline.

janisj Feb 20th, 2017 11:13 AM

That is definitely another possibility assuming it is daylight . . .

socaltraveler Feb 20th, 2017 01:43 PM

We like the Peppermill.

sludick Feb 20th, 2017 02:12 PM

Peppermill vote here, too.

JADSJBD Feb 20th, 2017 03:22 PM

Thanks all, we're not getting into Reno until around 9:00 pm. That's why we thought we'd stay there for the night, then see Reno the next day till time to check in at our hotel in Incline.

janisj Feb 20th, 2017 03:30 PM

Oh -- you DEFINITELY don't want to be driving Mt Rose in the dark.

Stay at the Peppermill (but not for a base to see downtown -- mainly as a base to see . . . the Peppermill :) )

If you want to go downtown -- then stay at Harrahs or the El Dorado (me - personally - I'd stay at the Peppermill)

Are you going to have any daytime free time while attending the workshop? If not, I would leave Reno in the AM (not bothering to explore downtown) and head straight to the Lake and visit Sand Harbor before heading to the hotel -- are you staying at the Hyatt?

Janisj, no time during the workshop to see anything. It's 9-5 for five days with activities at night also. We're getting to Reno on Thursday night and the workshop starts Monday morning, so we'll have a little time to check out both places. We wanted to see the lake and any other "must see" things in Incline before the workshop begins. Staying at Parkside Inn right across the road from the workshop at Sierra Nevada college because after the weekend, DH goes back home and I'll be on my own and wouldn't really have need of a car. We'll probably rent a car for the few days he's with me if cabs and Uber aren't easily accessible.

Sounds like Peppermill is the place!

Any restaurants that are favorites in Reno/Incline?

janisj Feb 21st, 2017 03:35 AM

>>I'll be on my own and wouldn't really have need of a car. <<

Tahoe is not really a place to see w/o a car -- just isn't. There is a semi-decent bus service called TART which can get you around the lake. But trust me IF you are going to be at Tahoe for a few days after your husband leaves you will want to keep the car.

>>. . . any other "must see" things in Incline <<

Incline Village is not a city. the total population is less than 9,000, there is one supermarket, several restaurants, a couple of small shopping centers, one Casino hotel . . . and a whole lot of mansions/high end homes along the beach front. The only 'must see' in Incline is the Lake. (I have a condo there)

The Lake Tahoe Basin is enormous, and places like Sand Harbor and Emerald Bay and Tahoe City are on far opposite 'corners' of the lake and you will want to have a car.

Meant to add - the Parkside is a motel on the east end of town on the highway about a mile from the main shopping area (supermarket, hardware store, a few restaurants, a bank, small movie theater, etc. all centered around the main intersection in town). There really isn't a 'downtown' a such.

JADSJBD Feb 21st, 2017 01:05 PM

I knew the Parkside was a motel, turned into an "Inn", but assumed since I just needed a place to sleep, it would be alright. :). Please let me know if this is not the case! I really want to feel safe, mainly. I see some condos and air b n b places, but was trying to get out of having to drive. I just couldn't see spending such huge sums for the Hyatt if I was going to be in class for most of the day and part of the evening, and being unable to use their amenities.

janisj Feb 21st, 2017 02:50 PM

Oh -- I wasn't 'dis-ing' the Parkside at all -- merely describing where it is located and why you would want a car.

I've never stayed there but it looks just fine from the outside.

But please reconsider having a car. You can't get lost - there is one road that circles the entire Lake (it changes highway number from place to place but it is always the same road). If you drive clockwise the lake is always on your right . . . and if you drive counter clockwise - there is the lake on your left :)

JADSJBD Feb 21st, 2017 11:45 PM

Thanks for the clarification, janisj, I was getting a little nervous! I am giving serious thought now to the car, thanks!

JADSJBD Jul 6th, 2017 04:29 AM

I wanted to thank you all for the Peppermill recommendation, it was perfect!
Also, many thanks for the gentle push to have a car. We rented one in Reno, and went all over the place on the way to Incline. Then the following day, we drove around the entire lake, spending time in all the pretty spots, dining, sightseeing, etc. all day. It was perfect, and as I was told, I definitely needed the car! Thanks for the solid information janisj, MichelleY., socaltraveler and sludick. It was a wonderful trip!
