Hotel in NYC - near E. Village?
I will be going to visit a friend who lives on Ave. B & 9th in the East Village in a few months and I am looking for a relatively inexpensive hotel for a few nights.
I grew up in and around the NYC area so to be honest I've never needed to stay in a hotel before so I'm kind of lost. Can anyone throw a few recommendations my way to get me started? I'm in my mid-30s so it doesn't have to be high-end but I don't want it to feel like a hostel either. Not sharing a bathroom would be great (more for my traveling companion who is a little fussy) than myself -- but it's not a deal breaker. The only thing I'd like is to be relatively close to the E. Village since I will be spending most of my time at my friend's apt and around. I usually stay w/her but after enough years not living in the city anymore -- the idea of sleeping on her floor of her 2 bedroom apartment that houses my friend, her husband, 3 kids and a dog --- well... I'm treating myself to my own place this time. Thanks, Tracy in St. Louis |
Not sure of your budget, but you can look at the Hotel on Rivington in the LES. It is relatively new and pretty stylish. Not sure of the rates there - definitely not budget but I don't think it's too bad for Manhattan ~$300ish per night I believe. I love the neighborhood also. Great bars & restaurants.

The only other places I know of in that area are East Village Bed & Coffee which I think is like a hostel with shared baths and there's Second Home on Second, also shared baths.
There's a place called the Blue Moon Inn that's getting surprisingly good reviews, but looks pricey for what it is. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev..._New_York.html There's a newish Howard Johnson's Express that looks like an overpriced dump. How long are you staying? If it's longer than a weekend, there are lots of apts. for rent in that area on vrbo.com, nyhabitat.com etc. If it's just for a weekend, I'd bid for something on Priceline in lower Manhattan and travel OR consider one of the hotels near the South Street Seaport. |
Oh, the Bowery hotel and Lafayette House are both new but pricey.
|
Yeah, price is very much an issue. The $300 plus stuff -- I just can't do. Both b/c it's too expensive and b/c I lived there most of my life so it's not like some "trip of a lifetime" thing. And I literally will be sleeping there. And then going to a few bars and over to Odessa for breakfast. Nothing exciting.
This would be a type of trip if my friend lived anywhere else I would stay w/her. But her apt. is just too small. I am going for like 4 days or so. Maybe a long weekend. I can't do the HoJos on Houston either --- it's too depressing -- I still remember when than area was completely busted up. Anymore recs? |
Yeah, forget about being so close to your friend and find the best option you can. Murray Hill East Suites, the EAstgate Tower, Park South Hotel, Holiday Inn Express Chelsea...
|
There is a Howard Johnson's on Houston
Jazz on the Town on 14th. It has doems and private rooms. |
Yeah, Jazz on the Town is a hostel -- I wrote that I wasn't intersted in that type of lodging. I'm just getting too old for that ... but thanks.
|
I would recommend Chelsea Lodge on 8th Ave in the Chelsea district. They do have shared bathrooms but you can get a deluxe room for less than 200.00/night with it's own bathroom. Look on tripadvisor.com for reviews. It's clean and a great place to stay while in New York. We walked to the East Village and almost everywhere from Chelsea Lodge.
|
Sorry, I gave you the wrong street for Chelsea Lodge. It's on West 20th between 8th and 9th.
|
I stayed at the East Village Bed & Coffee last fall in the Flight Room. www.bedandcoffee.com That room was just big enough for two people, and it was a bargain for $100 including tax. We did have to share a bathroom, but if the one on our floor was occupied, we just went to another floor.
The main drawback is the noise from the bars. I couldn't have gotten to sleep without the white noise machine in the room. Have you looked at Craig's list for rentals? |
Not alot of hotels in that area of town. I'd suggest the Hotel Grand Union on 32nd as a good value and location.
I'd suggest www.hotels.com and www.hotwire.com for other suggestions. |
Thanks everyone so much -- I kind of had a feeling that finding a cheap hotel in NYC was going to be a problem. I guess this is why for the last 7 years or so I've just sucked it up and crashed on my friends floor.
I haven't looked at craigslist b/c I am going for like 3 days -- 4 tops. Does anyone rent out their place for that short of time? I had considered E.V. B&B (my friend who I'm visiting suggested that) == but I've read a lot of reviews that said it's pretty young and noisey. I also checked out Hotel 17 --- which I guess is now an actual hotel (in my 20s I had a friend who lived there). I guess I really don't feel like commuting so I was hoping I would have to go all the way above 20th or across town. But the EV has gotten quite trendy now hasn't it? |
I just found the Hotel Marcel which is on 3rd and 34th that might work, and the bus goes down 3rd so you have a bit easier commute.
The rates are pretty good on www.hotels.com Hope this helps. |
This hotel isn't in the East Village, but it is in your price range, and it is a pleasant stroll in nice weather. Herald Square Hotel, 19 West 31st Street. I haven't stayed there but others on the board have recommended it.
|
Also -- I can't seem to find the Holiday Inn Express in Chelsea -- are you guys talking about the one on 29th? That seems a little far north for Chelsea?
|
Sorry gave the wrong address the the Hotel Marcel, it's on E24th, and 3rd Ave.
I used to live in that area and can't think of any other hotels that are very close to where you want to be. I think there is a hotel/B&B on 14th St, and maybe someone here will know the name. |
Ok, one more post for you. I have been doing a little sluthing for you and just found the St. Mark's Hotel on 3rd in the EAST VILLAGE. I didn't know that it had been recently rennovated and the rates are VERY good for NYC.
The rates are $140 to $160 and a surcharge on the weekends of $20, and the rooms on their website look quite nice. The webaddress is www.stmarkshotel.net This hotel will be just a few blocks from your friends apartment. Hope this helps. |
Oh -- St. Marks would be great -- just up the street and across the park. I guess I didn't know it was a travelers hotel. I vaguely remember it being kind of like a Hotel 17 in that it was a club kid/transient kind of place. I'll check that out. Thanks.

I cannot recommend this place, since I don't know anyone who has stayed here--just pass by every day. It might work for you. It's on 14th St just east of Third Ave.
