Hotel in Manhattan/Battery Park area?

Sorry abotu the title, I don't really know much about NYC whatsoever. But there's a group of us visiting a friend who lives in Battery Park area of NYC...can anyone name some hotels in the area that are pretty affordable (I know it's a relative term for NYC)?

We don't need anything fancy. Just a clean place to sleep, we won't be in the hotel at all. Just a clean, safe place!

Thank you!

Affordable may depend on when. That's generally a pretty quiet area on the weekends. If you check somewhere like Club Quarters Wall Street, you might get a really good weekend rate. Also, check the Marriott.

Just as an aside, Manhattan really isn't that big. Lots of people, yes. Lots of distance, not really.

For example, from Rockefeller Center - which is essentially smack in the middle of Midtown - to Wall Street is just a bit over 4 miles in a straight line.

If your friend lives in that part of NY, they should be able to tell you the easiest ways to get there provided you find a hotel not right nearby.

Some people get reasonable deals at the Embassy Suites and at the Millennium.

It depends on how many you are and what actual dollar amount = "affordable." Rates can vary dramatically from week to week and week to weekend depending on time of year and demand.

How many of you will there be and what are you looking to spend. for more than 4 people you will either have to get a suite or more than one room - and rooms for 4 will almost always cost more than rooms for 2.

Embassy suites downtown often has good deal on weekends since it is used mainly by business travelers.

Other ideas: Gild Hall (look on quikbook.com) There's a new Club Quarters down there. Hilton Garden Inn Tribeca. If you're only going to be 2 in a room, bidding on Priceline for 4* in Downtown/Soho generally gets the Millenium Hilton or the Marriott downtown. Check betterbidding.com for more help on that.

Question for you guys, may not be sure if you can help...
I found a place on vrbo.com....however, I've never used this. Is it reputable? For example, I contacted the owner, and they said they would leave my name with the doorman, who would let us in, and they would leave the keys inside the place for us....Does that sound legit? Thank you so much for all the help!
Here's the site for the vrbo.com listing:

Most short time private apt. rentals in NYC are ILLEGAL or SCAMS

Don't do it!

Why would it be illegal? Just curious...new to this.
It's available for weekly rates, but I just asked about a weekend and they said it's okay...so far it seems legit? Maybe I'm just naive though. They gave me the address of the building, and said once I book or put down a deposit, they'll leave the apt. #....

Read what I posted on the other thread for more info.

Why don't you tell us the address?

It would be illegal, because it's against the law to do short-term apartment rentals (which would make it a hotel, not an apartment, but it's very likely it isn't licensed as a hotel, or paying taxes, etc.). It would also very likely be in violation of the building's leases (if it's a rental) which usually prohibit short-term rentals, or condo/coop rules. Lastly, in NY in particular (easy pickings, I guess), it's not that unusual for it to be a total scam -- get your deposit and disappear.

Well I don;t know that block but google maps puts the address as on Hanover Pl (not unusual in NYC for an address's door to be around the corner). It doesn;t look like a residence - but more like a loading dock and I don;t see anything like a doorman.

And yes, short-term rentals in NYC are illegal - and often don;t exist at all - unless it is owners of a townhouse renting out part of their house or a building dedicated to corporate short-term housing - which often requires a minimum of a week or month. (Landlords typically write leases banning any sublet w/o their approval and financial check of tenants and condos/co-op tenants don't want random strangers in their building.) And even if they're telling the truth I wouldn;t want to sleep on an air mattress or a sofa.

Perhaps someone who knows the area can tell you if the building is legit. I would make that a specific post - and see if anyone works close enough to know.

Renting an apartment for 2 nights from a stranger on the internet is a recipe for disaster in NYC. No one with a decent apt. is going to rent it to a group for such a short time and you can easily wind up losing all your money. This is a classic mistake done by people who can least afford to lose the money. If budget is that much an issue, stay just outside Manhattan. There are a bunch of hotels in Jersey City, NJ that are a short PATH train ride or ferry ride away from lower Manhattan. Some people bid on Priceline for a room in a 4* hotel in Jersey City and can get one for $60-80/night, esp. on weekends. How are you planning on getting to NYC? Are you driving?
