Hotel in Hilo

We are planning a trip to BI in November and arrive in Hilo at 11:00 p.m. Any suggestions on a hotel/motel near the airport? Also, are cabs or shuttles available at 11:00 p.m.? We will be driving to Kona the next morning so we only need it for one night. Thanks!

there's not a whole lot of nice hotel options in Hilo, and the best possible ones are 2.5 to 3* at best

i prefer to stay at a B&B in Hilo, but your arrival time would make such a choice questionable

others to consider:

Bluefan,
Thanks for the info - I greatly appreciate it.

Largall,

Hilo Hawaiian is really the only hotel choice. Consider Dolphin Bay Hotel or the Shipman House also.
Stay AWAY from Uncle Billy’s and the Naniloa.
All of the hotels in Hilo are older and show it. For one night I would go with the HHH.
There are cabs etc, but I would recommend renting. I got in late once and they waited for me, but not sure if they still do that. If the website allows pick up that late, someone will be there. If not, it might be good to call a cab company or at least have their phone number handy, here are a few:
Hilo Harry’s 808-935-7091
Ace One: 808-935-8303
AA Marshalls: 808-936-2654
Again, I strongly recommend renting a car (though parking will be a hassle at HHH) it is still worth it. Otherwise it is cabs both ways.

Good luck and happy travels!

Echolynch,
Thank you so much for your insight. We have reserved a car, however, we cannot pick it up at 11:00 p.m. which is one of the reasons I was wondering if some of the hotels offered shuttle service. Do you recall who you rented from? We've never been to Hilo and coming from a 24/7 city, I'm a bit out of my realm. Thanks for the taxi contact info and hotel recommendation.

Largall,

I keep all my rental car contracts – no idea why, but I cannot seem to find the one in question. I am almost positive it was Budget. I do not know of a shuttle service from any of the hotels, but it can’t hurt to call and ask.

Good luck and happy travels!
