Hotel in Aptos or Santa Cruz for night before early flight out of San Jose, CA

We're flying out early on New Year's Eve to Portland, Oregon for a few days and need to be close to the San Jose airport for the flight.

I don't want to stay at an "airport hotel" and would rather find a place that's nice with a bit of fun to be had. Is there anything close to the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz? We'd leave work early and be there around 5:00 and I'd preciate restaurant recommendations too.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't consider Santa Cruz as being "close" to the airport.

It's at least an hour and a half's drive over the very curvy Santa Cruz Mountains. If it gets foggy, then you'll have to consider more commute time.

I'd suggest looking into the Hotel Valencia in Santana Row (San Jose) or the Larkspur Landing Hotel in Campbell as possible places to stay while not being "airport" hotels.

There are plenty of dining places in Santana Row where you can also "hang out" and catch a drink at night.

A great romantic place to dine near Aptos is the Shadowbrook Restaurant in Capitola.

The boardwalk is closed during the winter and it's pretty quiet in Santa Cruz that time of year.

I wouldn't stay over the hill if I had an early flight out of San Jose.

Easytraveler's suggestions are great ones. Another idea is to stay in downtown San Jose. The Christmas in the Park holiday display should still be up at that time and it's pretty to walk around there in the evening. There are also lots of restaurants in the downtown area you could walk to.

Thanks to both of you! I will definately look into both of your suggestions right now.

Easytraveler: I still remember our great dinner at The Hitching Post in Casmalia! Please call if you're ever in our area again!

I'll post back and let you know where we ended up!

I like the Santana Row and Downtown San Jose (I love Christmas in the Park!) suggestions. Although if you want something a little more town and less city, consider Los Gatos. The Garden Inn, Hotel Los Gatos or the Toll House Hotel would be good choices. Very good dining options there too. http://www.losgatos.com/hotels/

The delightful Saratoga Inn in the midst of a "restaurant row" would be another nice choice.

Hi, onemoneygirl!

Yes, that was a great dinner! Me too, I still remember the great dinner! Will always remember it - the drive, the wonderful company, that fireplace...

Wish I were around here New Year's, we could just have a small GTG up here. You're going to be in my backyard, so to speak. Unfortunately, we'll be in Hawaii at that time!

Maybe we could GTG down in the Central Coast next year? I'm due for another trip through your wine country.

On your trip up here: If you choose any of these non-airport hotels either downtown or Santana Row, check and see if they have free airport shuttle service. That is, if you're not planning on parking at the airport. Santana Row, especially, has lots of free parking.

Bit early, but Happy New Year and have a great trip up here and to Portland!

I'm now looking at the Inn at Saratoga that Neopatrick mentioned and also at the Santana Row area that several mentioned.

Patrick, it's interesting to me that the Inn doesn't seem to have potos posted on it's website... they were doing some kind of site maintenance last night.. I will look again today.

Easytraveler, I will actually be in San Francisco this week on business and could meet Thursday evening for a drink or dinner, if you're free. I won't have a car but would be happy to taxi somewhere if you're willing to drive into the city. Do you still have my phone number?

Thanks all!

Hi, onemoneygirl!

The Inn at Saratoga website showed some pictures this morning:

http://www.innatsaratoga.com/

However, there wouldn't be much going on there on New Year's Eve if I can remember from past seasons. I'd suggest sticking with Santana Row or DT San Jose.

Will you be up THIS Thursday? Wow! That'll be fun!

No taxis, please. I have a car and can pick you up anywhere.

Unfortunately, I didn't keep your phone number, but email me at bells918@hotmaildotcom and we can exchange cell phone numbers. Whatever did we do before cell phones!?
