Hotel in April

Hi

My wife and I are hoping to go to New York in April for 7 nights. At the minute we are having trouble finding a hotel for our budget for this time. We are looking for a hotel for around $250 per night.
We are reasonably flexible but will be seeing a lot of Broadway shows so would be nice to be walkable from there. The last time we were there we stayed at the Michelangelo and loved the area it was in - however that was for our honeymoon and is a bit out of our price range just now!!

Any advice??

Thanks

Martin

You need to look a little harder. I'm seeing a great many hotels on Expedia for around $250 or less per night in early April (most between $200 and $269 before taxes). Look for mid-range chain hotels like Comfort Inn, Courtyard, Red Roof Inn, etc.

You can also bid on Priceline or check out Hotels.com or Hotwire, but the quickest and easiest way to get a broad view of hotel availability is on a site like Expedia or Orbitz. Then go and try to book the room on your own through the hotel's own web site, if possible.

Also check out the Affinia Hotels group, looking for a studio room.

Have you looked at travelzoo to see if anybody is doing discounts for your dates?

" Look for mid-range chain hotels like Comfort Inn, Courtyard, Red Roof Inn, etc. "

Or just go to applecorehotels.com, which runs 5 of these so you can search simultaneously.

Most of the specials on travelzoo.com right now are for dates thru March but the NY Helmsley has a price of $179-199 thru April. Not in Times Square but not a bad option and probably cancelable if you find something better.

Look on kayak.com and quikbook.com for other options.

^ The Helmsley (on 42nd and 3rd) might be a decent choice. They seem to be trying to improve their service. I stayed there frequently in the 80's (LOL) and then once a couple of years ago. Imagine my surprise when the room was IDENTICAL to the 80's - same furniture (threadbare beyond belief), same bedspreads (ewww), same TV!

Anyway, I wrote a letter afterwards to Leona and got a full refund for both rooms! (I was there with friends.)

Now I see on Tripadvisor that the management responds to complaints, and I know they have renovated many of their rooms. So certainly consider it - and ask for a renovated room. The location might not be as convenient as Times Square for some things, but, hey, it's NY!
