Hotel ideas for first time visitors--help!
My husband and I are planning to visit NYC in July for 5 days. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary & have not been to the city before. Hotels we're considering in our price range (300-500/night or so) are the Trump, Sofitel,St. Regis, etc. We'd like something nice, view not necessary, but not terribly stuffy. Any help would be most appreciated!

Add the Mandarin Oriental to your list and stay there. Cost may be a bit above your range but weeeell worth it.

I've not stayed at the Mandarin Oriental and heard fabulous things about the hotel but my all time fave is the St. Regis. The Hotel is a historical landmark and one of the best hotels in the world.

I have heard that staying at the Trump International is a real treat. The Ritz Carlton is also supposed to be fantastic. Those would be my picks. Everyone loves the Sofitel but I don't think it's in the same league for that kind of money. It's lovely though. I know GoTravel loves the St. Regis but I don't think recent reviews on tripadvisor are very good.

My daughter and her husband have stayed both at the W Court and the W Tuscany and loved it. I'm not sure of what the room rates were.

Thanks so much for the suggestions! While we're at it, any thoughts on 'must sees or dos' other than the usual touristy things......we're fairly open to just about anything.

It would help to know your interests. Is this a splash out trip? Are you into fine dining? Museums? Music? Theater? Dance?

By the way -- recently had a colleague in town for business and was staying at the Mandarin O. What a room! What a view! The indoor pool is to die for! The service... well, wow is all I can say. Was thinking about doing a one night stay there with the fiance just for a splurge since I live here.
