Hotel Help: LaJolla, Laguna, Dana Point

My husband and I are celebrating 25year anniv.in Feb. Would like someplace romantic, ocean view not more than about $225 per night. Looking at the following:

Inn at Laguna Beach
Blue Lantern Inn - Dana Point
Inn at Sunset Cliffs - Point Loma
Humphreys Half Moon Inn - Shelter Island
Scripps Inn - La Jolla
Sea Lodge Hotel - La Jolla
La Jolla Inn
The Grande Colonial - La Jolla
Empress Hotel - La Jolla

Fodorites: Would love to hear any input.
Thanks

I've stayed at the Blue Lantern Inn, just lovely. Have to admit it was about 10 years ago, but it is well maintained, and some rooms have beautiful ocean views. Great spa tubs, and fireplaces in room, good breakfast included.
I have also been inside the Grande Colonial, which looks wonderful also, and has a great restaurant on site.
Can't miss with either of these 2 choices.

I have had a number of clients stay at the Blue Lantern and they all raved about it.

Hi petsitter--

We stayed at the Empress in La Jolla a couple of months ago. It's OK for its central location and reasonable rates, but there's no ocean view and it's not romantic. Utilitarian is the description that comes to mind. I'd suggest you go with one of the other recommendations.

Thanks for the replies. So far that's 3 votes for the Blue Lantern.

Inn at Laguna Beach gets my vote. Right on Main Beach, great views, nice place.

I love the Grande Colonial, but I don't recall any great ocean views. Then again, you pay corporate rates, you get low-floor rooms (albeit extremely comfortable low-floor rooms). I find the place quite romantic, however, and the hotel restaurant, Nine-Ten, is exceptional. Even better, the sublime George's at the Cove is down the street. And, you're in the heart of La Jolla Village, so life is perfect.

Thanks again for all replies. I still have some time before deciding as we are waiting for the airfares to come down.

Which airports are you looking at? Hopefully you're not limiting yourself to LAX for the Orange County points-- often SNA is cheaper, and much closer to the OC hotels (like 50-odd miles closer).

I have stayed at The Inn at Sunset Cliffs and the views are hard to beat. Have you looked at their website? The Presidential Suite meets all of your requirements with the exception of no fire place. They do serve a nice breakfast right in front of the ocean on weekends, coffee on all other mornings.

I found that I got quite a lower rate than what was quoted on their website by calling them.

I don't know about any of the other places that you posted but you may find reviews at www.tripadvisor.com

petsitter - Congratulations on your 25th. Where are you coming from and how long will you have? I do hope you will post back and tell us what you decided on and how it all turned out.

Sandy & rjw:

rjw: We have been going to Southern CA the last few years for our vacation. We have been flying into SNA and find it to be a beautiful and convenient airport. We will either fly into SNA or SanDiego. The plan is to spend a night or two at a really nice place and then head to Palm Springs to play some golf.

Sandy: Thanks for the congrats! I have looked at the website for Inn at Sunset Cliffs and the views look wonderful. The Inn itself looked sort of funky - I couldn't tell much by the looks of the outside. If we decide to go there I will definitely call them direct for pricing.

We are coming out of Dallas, TX. We usually go to Southern CA in the early Fall when the heat in Dallas has absolutely gotten to us.

The Grande Colonial in La Jolla has beautiful romantic rooms but with only a glimpse of the ocean since it's a couple of blocks "up". It is right in the village, tho.

The Scripps Inn in La Jolla is a darling smaller two story place right across from the ocean. There are fireplaces in the two front rooms, and they have a beautiful larger "junior suite" on the second floor in front which also has a fireplace. You can easily walk into the village from there.

The Inn at Laguna has a great location in Laguna. I don't remember the regular rooms being anything special, but we had a nice corner one once. Be sure you clarify the view as I remember some of the rooms on the lower floors have obstructed views. They bring a nice continental breakfast right to your room, and they have a pool.

Of the others that I am familiar with, I would scratch the Sea Lodge, La Jolla Inn, and the Empress.

La Jolla and Laguna are two of my favorite spots!
