Check out Hotel Mela.

BTW, I'm surprised at the lower rates than when I was there in June, and I'm guessing it's because, while there will be lots of tourists during the holidays, there are no business travelers. I LOVE NYC at Christmas.

Thank you all for your help, I booked the Wellington because I got an excellent rate and I love the location. I'll let you know how our trip was in January! Can't wait to see the Big Apple lit up like....a Christmas tree!

we really like the affinia hotels in nyc and, depending on your dates, the prices can be around $159. it goes up a few days before new years eve.

we have stayed at the affinia manhattan which is in times square and it has been recently redone. our friend swears by the affinia dumont -- and we have made xmas reservations there. (a high view floor, 400-600 sq feet and full kitchen studio.) the kitchenettes are the big reason we love affinia hotels. also, the rooms tend to be a bit bigger, as they are also geard to longer stays. it is so great to be able to make a simple breakfast in the room or for a quick in-between meal...to save money for the fancy ones. also great for doggie bags as lunch the following day. let us know what you choose.

Oddly enough, I've always been able to find good hotel discounts for that week right before Christmas.

For others: Look at the Omni Berkshire Hotel, midtown and boutiquey and so close to the middle of things but still quiet.

Enjoy the Wellington; it has a loyal following it seems.
