Priceline is usually the best rate in NYC.

I would also check Travelzoo. They run some great specials. I just booked Best Western Hannabee Hotel in the Little Italy area for $99/night - room with 2 queen beds, 1 block from the subway, and good TripAdvisor reviews.
You can also subscribe to the Travelzoo news letters - they publish a top 20 deals list once a week via e-mail.
I saw another good value come through on their top 20 recently, also, though can't remember off the top of my head which hotel it was

When are you traveling? The Hudson Hotel and the Wyndham Garden Hotel Times Square are both running specials advertised on travelzoo for $129 a night. Might be worth a look at that price.

Red Roof Inn. I just stayed there 3 nights. $400 total before taxes. Great location. Nice room. Stayed there a few weeks ago and will again in a heartbeat.

Stayed at the Hudson last year (through Priceline!). I loved it, DH didn't... VERY small rooms (yes, I know it's NYC), but very chic and trendy and a great location. Trendy bar scene, too - DH didn't have long pants with him so we couldn't get in but it seemed like it was really happening. Loved the outdoor courtyard / bar (pricey, yes - but worth it - and again, it is NYC..)
Katie_H - LOVE Travelzoo... Used them this weekend for Washington DC too..

This is what's on travelzoo this week - the Amsterdam Court Hotel. I haven't heard of it, but maybe some of the NYers have.

Wow!! I thought I was a crafty Googler - but these are great!! Travelzoo and travel-ticker are new to me!! I haven't found the perfect deal yet - but I am still looking through all the sources. Keep the advice coming - I'm sure other Fodorites will benefit too!!

WHY haven't you found the perfect deal yet? What are you looking for rather than our just shooting in the dark? What are the exact dates, what do you want to spend and what kind of hotel do you want? Have you looked on quikbook.com?

While I was really tempted to book the Affinia Gardens on the East side for 169, I am traveling with my kids and realized the hotel's size matters to them - they love the big giant hotels!! So I kept up with Priceline and got the Crown Plaza in TS for 157 a night. The deal on the Hudson hotel looks amazing and I think if it was just me and hubby I would have went for that!!!
Thanks to all - TravelZoo is my newest resource to check for deals!!

mclaurie - I am really picky!! I used quikbook in January and got an amazing deal at the Iroquois for a girlfriend and I - we loved it!! There wasn't anything for my dates now that appealed to me.

Are you saying you've already gotten the Crowne Plaza in TS for this trip via Priceline? I assume you know PL doesn't guarantee a room for more than 2 in NYC.

Please clarify if you're still looking, what dates and how many you are. Many of these prices are just for 2 people.

Agreed - many of these hotel rooms have one double bed - full stop. and the simply can;t fit more than 2 people. Een if they could - the price only cover 2.
