I stayed there for a night a couple of years ago. It's a small unpretentious motel, centrally located in Kapaa. The rooms are oceanfront, on a nice but unswimmable beach (shallow reefs and rough surf). No pool. It's not a resort to hang out at, but for a budget place you could do a lot worse.

Is that place still there? Stayed there in '79 and it was fine--how many affordable places are right on the beach? There was a nice coffee shop across the road for breakfast. And you could walk to the small shopping mall.

Here's what The Ultimate Guide to Kauai says:

24 rooms, no phones, no air conditioning, refrigerators in some. This is one of those I'm-just-looking-for-a-place-to-sleep types. Good oceanfront location and clean rooms. The Ocean View rooms for $59 are the best value. Rooms are $59–$89.

Daphne, you stayed there 23 years ago. Since then there has been so much construction as well as a major hurricane. How can you know there would still be a coffee shop across the street? Would the shopping mall still be small after 23 years? Isn't there a cutoff for recommending a place, say 5 years?
