Hotel Conundrum-Charleston

Hi Fodorites
Am going to Charleston for three nights in March. Having never been there, we would like to be situated in the most convenient spot relative to the historic district and restaurants and be within our budget of up to 350/night.
Right now, we are deciding between the Frances Marion and the Mills House Wyndham Grand Hotel. Understand that Charleston is not too large and fairly walkable, but still. Would appreciate any advice or opinions on the two with respect to hotel quality and location as noted.

Thanks so much-- you guys are always killer helpful

Looking at this map Mills house is further "in". Have you looked at the Vendue Inn by chance. And I think many have reported that the Harbor View is good.

This month's Garden and Gun is all about Charleston and a beautiful issue.
And this is an online site G&G has for Charleston

We loved the Vendue Inn, I don't see how the location could be any better. We didn't use our car at all, except when we drove over the bridge to have dinner at Tavern and Table in Mount Pleasant. Happy to answer specific questions if you have them.

Anywhere near the Market is going to be pretty central. We like the French Quarter Inn, which is a block south. Vendue is right across from the market, Harbor View is just off the east end. There are many good restaurants along East Bay Street (east end of the Market) and numerous others within a block or two of the Market.

The Vendue is a new and snazzy place with a fabulous rooftop lounge but, we loved the Elliott House on Queen, a lovely B & B with garden courtyard and 'happy hour' plus delicious breakfasts. Right next door to 82 Queen, Poogans Porch, and Husk, all great restaurants.

Thank you!

Really appreciate the feedback. Based on hotel reccs here from others, of the two, the Mills House seems to be the closest to the area we have in mind. Now to try to convince my sister to consider the Vendue!

Any specific thoughts or advice on the Mills House Wyndham?

Why is your sister set on the Mills House.

It’s more price sensitivity related. She wants to be in the under $400 range but be in a hotel rather than an Airbnb or bed and breakfast. Go figure. So this hotel appeared one of the two options In the best location (based on my research) with the Francis Marion as the other.

If I’m overlooking someplace please let me know and thanks!

To me the Frances Marion is too far "up" although there is plenty to do. Have you looked at any of the others, or even looked at hotels.com? What are your dates. The Vendue IS a hotel--just called an "inn".
I think others have more charm than either of yours mentioned.
I did plug in some times early in the month during the week and weekend mid month and the prices ARE eye watering!!
