Hotel Bentley New York

I have a few quetions:

My husband and I are staying at the hotel Bentley for three nights in ten days time. Is the hotel okay?

How long will it take us to walk from the hotel to the nearest Metro?

Any good restaurants in the area. We would not want to spend more than around $30 each and hate pretensious places.

Finally my husband would love to see the Yankee Stadium. Are there any tours of this?

Many thanks. Sorry to ask so much!

The hotel is as far over on the east side as you can get. It is not very convenient to the nearest subway stop at 59th and Lexington Ave. The walk will take at least 15 minutes.

We stayed there a couple of summers ago and loved it. I think the rate was something like $125.00 and the room we had was larger than average in my opinion for a hotel room in NYC - large living room area, separate bedroom, comfortable king sized bed, all with a view of the 59th street bridge - my only complaint was the bathroom which was on the small side and it had no counter space. And service at front desk sometimes left alot to be desired. The rate included continental breakfast which I would'nt rave about. There was a diner about a block up the street where we ate breakfast most mornings and lots of corner stores in close range where you could buy fresh fruit etc. We liked the neighbourhood alot. Agree that the nearest subway is quite a hike but again, that did'nt bother us as we enjoyed the walk through the very pleasant neighbourhood and if we did'nt feel up to it, we would jump in a cab. We thought the choice of resturants in the area was good at least to suit our tastes. And if you fancy a little comedy, Dangerfields comedy club is around the corner from the hotel.

You'll find a bunch of great restaurants on First & Second Avenues, just west of the Bentley.

Totoya (sushi) on the corner of First & 63rd has amazing rolls, possibly the best in NYC.

Just north of Totoya you'll see Maya, an excellent, high-end Mexican restaurant. If you've never had gourmet Mexican food (not an oxymoron, I assure you), then try Maya.

Merchant's on the corner of First & 62nd is very popular with the Yankees and features a traditional menu.

Becky's is a great pub on First around 64th Street. Excellent burgers and a decent cuban sandwich as well.

You'll pass Baker Street on the way to Becky's. It's famous for being the bar where Tom Cruise worked in the movie "Cocktail."

Also close by, Mugg's for great burgers and John's Pizza, also excellent.

Just walk over to First Avenue and head north (right).

Depending on where you're going the bus might be a better option for you since the subway is so far away. Ask at the desk when you're heading out and they can tell you which is the better choice.

I'm not aware of any tours of Yankee Stadium out of season.

I've never stayed there, but I live a block away. The location is not great (it's far east, right by the entrance to the FDR highway. You can walk to subway, but might not want to depending on weather. (There is an entrance to subway closer than 59th St. You can enter the subway at 60th St. and 3rd Ave for the N/R or the 4/5/6). The walk will take 10-15 minutes. There is a bus stop (the M31 bus) right across the street that will take you down a few blocks to 57th St. then across 57th St. You can get off at Lexington Ave and walk 2 blocks to the subway at 59th St. (the transfer from bus to subway is free if you use a metrocard.
As for Yankee Stadium, it is easily accessible by subway from 59th St. (take the #4 train to Yankee Stadium, 161 Street. You can check the yankees' web site (yankees.com) for information on tours--they do have them, but you should check for the details since it is the off season.

In addition, as to restaurants, Gekko gave some good choices--Maya is excellent, but a bit on the pricey side. There are several good, neighborhood places. There's very good Indian food at 61st and First Ave. (2 blocks from Bentley) called Maharaja--they have an excellent lunch buffet as well. You can just walk along First Ave and find plenty of places to eat.
