Hotel advise in San Diego

Hi, I ma visiting to San Diego in November with 2 kids (9 and 11) for 5 nights. Please advise the hotel which has reasonable rates with breakfast and location is convenient. Thanks

It would be helpful to know how you define "reasonable" rates. Give us a number.

Three people total? Or four?

kenny_Gua Oct 25th, 2019 07:23 AM

We are 2 adults and 2 kids (9 and 11). I am looking hotel less than $200 CAD $. Is this reasonable number?

Where do you want to be? San Diego is a large county.

If you want to be close to downtown, I recommend Little Italy. There's also the Gaslamp Quarter, which is considered the "main" area of downtown - as far as restaurants and nightlife are concerned.

The hotel circle area in Mission Valley is great because you can easily jump on a freeway to just about anywhere, but it's definitely not foot-traffic friendly. You'll need to drive everywhere you want to go.

La Jolla is really pretty - relatively upscale, close to beaches, lots of restaurants and shopping.

North Park seems to be the hip area right now, but it's more on the gritty side than upscale.

I recommend that you map out the places you'll be visiting and then focus in on one or two neighborhoods that will be most convenient.

From his other thread this is what their interests are

good beach
good sighting place
Big Malls

Look at some place like the Catarmaran, on Mission Bay. It's very close to the Pacific Ocean - easy walk, and easy drive to any of the sightseeing places - Sea World, San Diego Zoo, Legoland, etc. as well as the huge malls at Mission Valley.

Right near the Catamaran Resort is the Blue Sea Beach Hotel, part of the Pacifica group. Check their website for specials. I think it will be hard to find something nice in your price range. The Catamaran and Blue Sea charge for parking also. Mission Valley may offer less expensive options.

CAD$200 is only about $150 and when you factor in taxes, parking, and possibly resort fees the rate will have to be around $130 or even less which is very very low for anywhere near a beach.

Nonsense. Go to hotels.com, or one of those type of websites, create an account, and search on Mission Bay for the number of people with free parking for your dates.

For example I see La Quinta Inn & Suites in Mission Bay for $105 per room with free parking and free breakfast, (would be ABOUT $120 USD with taxes).

Don't wait too long though.

Mission Bay is the cheapest place to stay for families with free parking.

If there isn't a conference the rates are often very good.

Check the reviews for Cherokee Lodge near Coronado beach.

Ocean Villa Inn also comes in under your budget...……..or Hampton Inn Downtown near Waterfront Park (harbor not beach)

When searching on booking.com or hotels.com or even a hotel's website, make sure you know ALL of the taxes and fees/charges that will be added to the room rate. You might have to complete the booking process (make sure it's cancellable) before you know the full story. (Or you could call the property.) So many hotels now are charging "resort fees" even if the property isn't really a resort, and sometimes the charges aren't apparent until you book.

We stayed at Best Western Plus Bayside in downtown San Diego on Ash St. very convenient to Little Italy. Nice breakfast included.

SeaF Oct 26th, 2019 04:06 PM

The Best Western also had a free airport shuttle.

The BW Bayside Inn is only available for some of the OP's dates.

None of those on your list are on Ash St.
The one mentioned by SeaF "Best Western Plus Bayside" is on Ash St.

Be sure you look at a map so you know where that hotel is, and is not. If your priority is to be able to walk to a Pacific Ocean beach then that hotel is not the right one for you.

Maybe you have already decided but with kids I would definitely rather be near the Catamaran than downtown just because the beach is such a big part of San Diego. The Blue Sea Beach hotel mentioned above has good sales on right now and so if you book direct it looks like you could something that works for 2 adults and 2 kids for around $150.

mlgb Oct 30th, 2019 10:47 AM

Agree you got some much better recommendations that the BW on Ash Street. Not sure why you focussed on that one?

Best Western Plus Bayside Inn, 555 W Ash St, San Diego CA 92101. 844-225-0052

That BW Bayside on W. Ash looks nice, has reasonably-priced parking if you need that, and is easy walking to the Embarcadero where you'll find the Midway Museum and the Star of India, plus harbor cruises. Lots of restaurants close by. The Trolley is close and you can get to Fashion Valley for shopping easily on it. Also to the Mission San Diego de Alcala, the first of the California Missions. Also, in the other direction, to Petco Park where you might be able to take a tour. It's not near any beach, so, as others have said, if that's important, this would not be the best place for your family. It is close to Balboa Park, though, and the Zoo.

I just came back from San Diego with two kids. We stayed at Best Western Island Palms on Shelter Island. I booked through hotels.com at $115/night plus taxes. Free parking across the street, lovely view of the marina. No breakfast. https://www.islandpalms.com.
