Horseshoe Bend
We have Horseshoe Bend on our 'list' - and, after looking at Utahtea's beautiful photos, it's even higher on that list now! But I wonder how long that hike is? Is it difficult? Is it easy to spot the sign for the turnoff?
(Sorry for all these questions!) |
The hike is 3/4 of a mile (one way). You go up a little sand dune hill then down to the bend. It's a pretty easy hike. I recommend going early in the morning if you go during the summer. The heat will be the biggest factor!
The turnout for the parking area is NOT well marked. We were shown where it was when we came back on the float trip. The turn out is on Hwy 89 about 4 miles south of Page, AZ. just past mile marker 545. It's a right hand turn and I belive the road is gravel/dirt. You drive a short distance to the parking area. This is an fantastic spot, and it's not really even a hike, but just a 10 minute 'stroll' across some mostly flat desert. Don't miss it! It amazes me that it is not really well publicized in Page, even our hotel wasn't that familiar with it.

Thanks guys! Is that just past the 545 mile marker on the way to Page on Hwy89, or on the way out of Page?
I had a little search around and came up with this: http://www.travelsw.com/southwest-tr.../horseshoe.htm Certainly looks a long way down - and I'll probably stand well back! Loved your pics of Bryce too, btw, Utahtea - you have made me want to go down into those hoodoos so much! (off to look at itinerary again - to see what can be done .... :)) |
wildblueyonder,
On the way to Page or out of Page on Hwy 89 depends on where you are coming from...LOL! It's south of Page, AZ. If you are coming from the Grand Canyon you will pass it before you get to Page. If you are coming from Kanab, Utah then it's after Page. Utahtea |
