Hoover Dam delays ... how long?
 

Driving from Phoenix to Vegas next week (during the week, not the weekend). How long is the typical delay at the dam? Is it better to bypass the dam and take SR 68/163 via Laughlin to US 95, which Mapquest says adds 23 miles but may take less time?

We will probably be in this area mid-day.

Driving from Vegas to Kingman in April we spent about an hour crawling through the dam area.It is a beautiful place to be stuck in traffic.

Thanks logandog ... having done the dam tour years ago I'll take the Laughlin detour if an hour delay is typical.

If you are coming from the Arizona side there is much less delay. We did that mid-day on a holiday weekend and it wasn't a problem. Slow going, but no serious delays.

I think I saw a picture of you(I am guessing it is you). Are you really into hummingbirds? I have about 50 birds in my yard every night. I am in Oklahoma, btw.

Hi Spiro, probably not me but dunno for sure ... we aren't really into the strobes/feeders style of photographing hummers (which is the best way) but did take a lot of shots of free-flyers once on a trip for something else in New Mexico, and have photographed a few on the nest when we are lucky enough to find a nest (I think just 3-4 times).

50 each night is a lot, you are lucky.

This was a Bill Hilton Jr. and was project leader for Ruby Throat Hummingbirds. Said he was an avid hiker, naturalist, and further outdoorsy type things. I just figured for sure it was you. I think it said he was a professional photographer as well. Oh well, sorry.

My parents went to Alaska last month. I think googled your name looking for Denali Photos. They had a great time, and I think the highlight for them was landing on McKinnley. They also went to Barrow and said it was very interesting and depressing. We are related to the Oklahoma Govenor(3rd cousin), but had never met him. He and my dad ended up having a long conversation in the airport. He had been on a fishing trip. We are all going to Utah next summer, and I had my dad read your advice on that area. My parents are driving and we will fly out and meet them. I have been to Monument Valley, but he hasn't. He plans to do Canyon De Chelly and a few other stops. We will then head towards Arches and Bryce. I have done just about everything in Utah except Bryce and The Wave. Hope to go back and do some more canyoneering around Moab at some point. Also would like to hike Cateract Canyon. Anyway, thanks.

You'll really like the Wave area, once you get past the permit nuisance.

Maybe a trip you would enjoy is to canoe down the Green River to where it meets the Colorado at Spanish Bottom (part of Needles unit of Canyonlands, just above Cataract Canyon). You can overlay a day or two at Spanish and hike this area plus the Doll House. Have a jet-boat pick you up and take you upstream to Moab. Great flat-water trip! You can hike all three units of Canyonlands on this.

We put in near the town of Green River, about 112 miles or so of river in a week, but there's also a put-in place out of Canyonlands Island-in-the Sky that cuts it to about 50 miles. Rent the canoe and arrange the pick-up in Moab, it's pretty inexpensive ... great wilderness trip thru two major canyons, Stillwater and Labyrinth.

I don't know why I said hike, I meant raft. lol
