Hoover Dam
 

We are going to Las Vegas in early October & will be staying at the Flamingo.We have access to a car for a day and were told we should see the Hoover Dam. How far is it from Flamingo?Any advice/information would be greatly appreciated.Thank You

Type in Hoover Dam, and I'll bet you can come up with all sorts of useful information. It may even have answers for questions you haven't even thought of.<BR><BR>-good luck!!

It's been a while but I seem to remember the trip from the strip to the Hoover Dam being just under an hour. The tour is worth taking.<BR><BR>The Flamingo has location going for it. Rooms are "OK". There are much better casinos.<BR><BR>We'll forgive forgive Darla for being a snotty b*tch.....

Poor, poor, Darla...what a lonely life she must live.<BR><BR>It is about an hours drive out to the Dam from the Flamingo. It is worth the trip but the guided tour is not worth the cost. The only thing the guided tour offers is a chance to ride an elevator down to the turbine room. You don't get to go outside at the bottom of the Dam. Save your money and just walk around the Dam area yourself (seriously).

Had a great vacation there with the family a few years back. Even took the dam(n) tour. You should see the video. More thrilling than I could ever have imagined.<BR><BR>Still waiting for son to return in one of the four cars he won while there.

Don't forget to use the toilets at the dam.Nice art nuveau decor sort of like rockyfeller center building in the apple.the arizona side of the dam is in mountian time.

Such tight wads on this post. We were there this summer and paid to get inside. There is not a "tour", but you can just choose different things to see and do once inside. The tour inside to the turbine room was the highlight! Also, the Flamingo has a great location and pool area. Drive wasn't quite an hour--no sweat!! Have a great time!!

jpm's response is correct. I was at the Hoover Dam two weeks ago and it is not the same tour I enjoyed twice before. You now go through a roadside security check and an entry check as you pay your $10.00 fee. You no longer can walk near the 30-foot wide water by-ways that lead from Lake Mead and hear the roar of the water. You can no longer view the dam from the platform at the bottom of the dam. What you can do is ride an elevator, with an armed officer, to the turbine/power room and listen to a short description and then proceed to a picture area with audios.

The Hoover Dam is a fascinating site to see. The sheer size of it, the efforts that went into its building and all that water! Yes , I like it, but am also disappointed that the tour is not what it used to be. Since 9/11 the changes are understandable. The $10.00 fee might be a bit much for the short "tour", but it is also comforting to see all the armed security present. The photo area with audio descriptions documenting the dam's history was informative, but not quite as impressive as the pre 9/11 tour.
