Hood River, OR suggestions?

I'll be in Hood River October 23-26 at a B&B near town. During that time they're having their Cider Days and Heirloom Apple Festival. I will be without a car. Does anyone know if those events are easy to get to? Shuttle service to the orchards? Any restaurant ideas? Has anyone taken the Hood River Railroad tour? Or a day cruise down the river? Thanks for any help!

I don't really know the answer to your question, but maybe you can check with the local chamber of commerce. I am sure they would be able to help. There is definitely a tourist information office there because I was in there on my recent trip to Oregon. The railroad is a bit of a drive from the town, so I hope you can find a ride.

Hi, Deborah!

Thanks for responding. I called the visitor's center a month or so ago and they didn't know if shuttle services are going to be available. They also sent me an information packet which helped in planning my trip, but I still have these unanswered questions. I was hoping someone out there in Fodorland would know. I'm not leaving till Friday, so my fingers are still crossed!

I was going to respond until I realized that you won't have access to a car. The downstairs room at the Sixth Street Bistro is pleasant and the menu includes stir frys and other such items. The Treulleun Cafe on Oak Street (the main drag) looks good, but they were playing annoying music on my last visit, so I went elsewhere. If it's a clear day the railroad tour should offer great views of Mount Hood, and a cruise on the Columbia has to be great, because it's such a beautiful river.
