Shangri-la was the home of Doris Duke, tobacco heiress. She was an avid collector of mid-eastern art and architectural stuff, and incorporated it into her home. After she died about 10+ years ago, it was turned into a museum.
Because it is in a residential neighborhood (Diamond Head Area, on the ocean) all visitors meet at a different museum and are shuttled there in small groups. Hard to get reservtions cuz there are not too many. It is closed in September, too. |
