I love the Sheraton Moana I think it is four star. It has the charm of Waikiki golden period (20's-30's).

I have gone here alone and found it was very conducive to meeting people. Love sitting on the rockers on the porch or under the banyon tree on the terrace.
Royal Hawaiian, a sister property and a bit younger is nice but isolating.
Halekulani looks nice but it is squeesed into a small piece of land in a very busy area. I have had dinner, drinks. listend to music here and come away feeling the charm must lie inside the rooms not lobby or grounds, restaurants (commenting on space not food), bar.

Outside of Waikiki away from Honolulu by about 15 minutes is the Kahala Mandarin. There are shuttles into Waikiki and this may be what you are looking for. Wide open grounds, beautiful property, excellent food.

If you are there on Aug5 check out Honolulu Star bulletin calendar events very very indepth look at events taking place throughout the island. You can look at this online.
