Honolulu dining for group of 40!
 

My kids will be going to Oahu with their school band. Altogether with students and chaperones, there are roughly 40 people.
Breakfasts will be in-room fruit and cereals from Costco, lunches are food-court at the malls or provided. But don't know where to go for dinner. They would like to have at least one decent sit-down dinner at a restaurant that is not too pricey. The band director said last year they ate at The Spaghetti Factory and Bucca de Beppo (sp?) but they had only 20 people to deal with. Does anyone have any ideas on where they can go--say, a buffet or fairly reasonably priced meal? The kids age range from 11 to 13 (6th-8th grade).

I'm picturing the two all you can eat buffet style places in Waikiki. Certainly a large group would be no problem at all and the kids could pick whatever suits them. Sorry I can't recall the name but I'm sure others can fill it in, they are extremely popular with tourists and families.

Can I join the Band?

Have a great trip. Maybe you can collect ahead of time and attend a luau?

Perry's Smorgy is a buffet for about $10.

Two locations in Waikiki?

Best one is at 2380 Kuhio Ave almost directly behind the International Market Place. Corner of Kuhio Ave & Kanekapolei St. Close to King's Village.

I just looked at their website and only the Kuhio one shows up, so perhaps the other one closed. It is (or was) at 250 Lewers St.

In the Holiday Inn on Ala Moana Blvd there is China Buffet that is inexpensive. Near Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Check out this thread for something new in Waikiki. Because it isn't open yet, I have no idea of what the cost will be for the nightly dinner or Polynesian show.

In one of the malls was a Ruby Tuesdays we ate at a couple of times.
Very nice. There is also a Round Table Pizza in the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Thanks Dusty. I'm guessing maybe the Lewers Street smorgy location bit the dust in the Outrigger remodel. It was right in the heart of that area.

There is also Buffet 100 (Chinese)on second floor of Ward Warehouse 1050 Ala Moana Blvd. This is across from Kewalo Basin and is about 1 1/2 miles from Waikiki. Too far to walk from Waikiki. But the food is good & inexpensive

Besides Perry's in that area & Buzz's (mentioned in a different thread), the McDonalds across from Reef on the Beach also bit tihe dust for the construction.

Thank you everyone. I gave the band director all the suggestions and she likes Perry's Smorgy in Waikiki. It's all you can eat buffet for $9.95 and the place can hold up to 300!

No parade, but they are going to the water park and Ice Palace(?) Has anyone been to this ice place?

Are they not performing anywhere?

Ice Palace is just an ice skating rink....

My granddaughter goes to the Ice Palace often. She lives near there.

As Melissa says, it is just a skating rink.

It is in Stadium Mall and right across from Aloha Stadium (Swap Meet Wed, Sat, Sun). Also only about 6 blocks or so from Arizona Memorial Visitors Center.

Just a note about Perry's.

Perhaps someone could pay in advance, so the kids don't have to wait (outside) to get in.

Got back from our band trip. dusty--we took your advice on smorgy's. Where is the parking? We managed to find one paid public parking spot right in the back of the restaurant, and another van found parking across the street. One van couldn't find parking and ended up a half mile away somewhere and the driver didn't show up for dinner until we were all finished eating. To make matters worse, his cell phone broke so we had no idea what happened to him or where he was. I know parking in Waikiki is a challenge, but if they can seat 300 people, wouldn't they have parking? We stayed at the airport hotel and not in Waikiki so walking was not an option.

I am interested about the Chinese buffet you mentioned at Ward. Maybe next year(?).

The skating palace was so cold inside. One kid had his Circa shoes stolen off the top of the lockers.

The weather was iffy but we went to the water park anyway where it was partly cloudy but sunny enough to enjoy the day. It is a wonderful venue for kids of all ages to enjoy.

One girl fainted after the band concert. Luckily, one of the chaperone moms is a pediatric RN.

My son's big toe nail got separated and had to get it pulled off.

One kid came down with strep throat and a fever.

Other than that, we had a wonderful time and my body is showing for it.

Parking in Waikiki is horrendous! Now you know why locals don't go so often. Perry's Smorgy relies on a lot of foot traffic, though, so that's why you wouldn't find a lot of customer parking. That area of Waikiki is packed tight with hotel rooms, so there is no question that they would have a lot of foot traffic.

Sounds like a typical band trip, eh? I remember our band went to China once and one guy got LOST!

The pay parking lot behind Perry's does have about 10 spots that are free for Perry's. Those are the ones closest to the restaurant. Also in the same lot there are those like the one you found.

If those are full (which they are many times), there are public lots/garages throughout Waikiki.

Airport Hotel?

One of the reasons I mentioned Perry's was that it is walkable from anywhere in Waikiki. I also mentioned that Buffet 100 (Ward Warehouse) was not walkable. There is another Buffet 100 much closer to the airport, just on the other side of Pearlridge Center.

I assumed (evidently wrong) that you were staying in Waikiki as almost everyone does.
