Honolulu Car Rental
July 9 - 17
Car rental rates at HNL are exorbitant. Example Dollar Mid Size = $618
I can get a car at
Hertz
5000 Kahala Ave, Honolulu, HI 96816
for $460.
Is it worth the hassle?
Alternatively, maybe I should just rent a car on a daily basis as needed for 2 or 3 day trips out of Waikiki. That would save parking costs as well.
Any thoughts on this?

That Hertz location is at the Kahala Hotel which is east of Diamond Head and about 15 miles from the airport. If I recall, a taxi is going to cost you around $80 (plus tip) each way so that will eat up just all your "savings" if you pick-up your rental car there instead of at the airport.

Depends on where you are staying in HNL and how close you will be to a rental car office. Last year I stayed at the Moana Surfrider, and an Enterprise office was 1 1/2 blocks away. It was an easy walk and pretty quick check-in for a 1 day rental.
If you don't rent at the airport, you will also have to factor in the cost of getting to and from the hotel. I used a shuttle service that stopped at several hotels, but it was a very long wait at the airport for all passengers to gather luggage and rather slow going to finally get to our hotel. I don't remember the cost of the shuttle, but next time I am willing to pay more to hop in a taxi when I am ready to go.

I actually resolved my situation. I booked a Hertz car at their 205 Lewers Street, Honolulu location which is an 18 min walk from my hotel.
I also took it for less days figuring I can spend the first and last day of the vacation hanging around Waikiki without a car.
I got my cost down now to $223 for a 5 day rental. According to the hotel concierge a taxi to and from the airport will cost about $35-40 each way.
