Perhaps you would be happier renting a condo, especially one where you rent directly from the owner and can e-mail them in advance about how recently they have installed new carpet, painted, etc.
There are a few websites dedicated to these types of rentals, one I know of is at:

http://www.vrbo.com

Use your favorite search engine to find others.
Colleen,
I found another "vacation rentals by owner" website. The 4 major islands are represented.

http://www.hawaiicondosbyowner.com/

Good luck!

Hi Colleen,
Just checked the hawaii condos by owner website and it worked for me with no problems after I clicked on Oahu. How strange!
OK, here's my suggestion to learn of other websites that might offer more condos in Honolulu. Use my favorite search engine -- Google.

http://www.google.com

Type in search words:

honolulu condo rentals by owner

That should bring up more than 3 more websites. Keep a lookout for condos that have tile floors. Some do especially if they are oceanfront to avoid people tracking in so much beach sand.

Good luck!
