Honeymooning in San Franciso
 

We are planning to head to San Francisco for our Honeymoon over 7 days during September. <BR><BR>Does anyone have suggestions as to where we should stay? eat? spend our days, etc?<BR><BR>Thanks for your help!<BR>A&D

We just got back from San Francisco last night. We were there for 5 days - a suprise birthday gift from my husband. It is one of our favorite cities and we had a wonderful time. <BR>Do you have price range and idea of activities you are interested in?

What a wonderful present!<BR><BR>We really don't know what would be reasonable. He has found a deal on the internet for the Pan Pacific Hotel. It looks nice in the photos, but then again what hotels don't :) We are seriously condsidering this but are continuing to search on-line and quizzing friends. <BR><BR>We really have no clue where to begin. Any suggestions would be great!<BR><BR>

What if you stayed across the bay at Inn at the Tides and then ferried over to SF to visit? That would be romantic. You could also head out to the wine country for a visit.

Why not honeymoon in a nice place such as Hawaii? SF is not the most appealing place for such a vacation. Lots of crime, street vagrants, and basically a run down city. Yuck!

When were you last is SF, Shawn? What scared your scrawny butt the most?

Ummm...maybe the grime and trash blowing around everywhere, the hordes of vagrants, and the generally worn look to the entire downtown area?

Hi. I don't know about the previous negative postings related to SF but my DH and I honeymooned there in 1996 by accident (had planned a Bora-Bora/Moorea honeymoon that got typhooned out at the last minute!) and have returned almost yearly since because we loved it so much. I have attended conventions there frequently and usually stay in what I think is called the union square area.<BR>We used fodor's guide to pick our hotel, which actually wasn't the greatest. SF hotels are pricey, and that can be misleading- you don't always get more for your money and location is part of the price. <BR>I like the Westin, partly because of the "heavenly bed". It is rather impersonal though, and a big high-rise kind of place. It is close to some GREAT places to eat, and the line for the cable cars though. There was a place down the street called Kuleto's I think which had wonderful fresh baked goods, fruit, and coffees that you can grab on the run and we still talk about how great it tasted. We have been back there many times and found it just as we remembered it. <BR>I think 7 days in the city might be a bit long- although there is plenty to do (and eat!). You may want to consider heading up to the wine country for 1-2 days or more, just to experience it. We weren't big wine connoiseurs but the pace, etc was so relaxing -- it was just what we needed after the crazy wedding activities. We stayed at a great B&B there with an innkeeper who facilitated everything you could ever imagine to do-- the hot air balloon ride, excellent dinner reservations at the best places, private winery tours. We also stayed out of Napa and went to Alexander and Sonoma valleys to get the less touristy views. Like us, you may be there during harvest time and get to see them bringing in the trucks of fruit. It was such a neat thing to experience it first-hand.<BR>Also, just north of San Fran (30-45 min drive as I remember) you can go to a small redwood forest, which is humbling and beautiful. <BR>If you are not interested in the wine country and are more into beaches, you could go down the coast towards carmel and monterey. <BR>IMHO you can't go wrong with a SF-based honeymoon. The food and drink are spectacular and there are plenty of things to explore together. Have fun!!
