Honeymooning in Key West
My son has made reservations in Key West for his January 23-27 honeymoon. I would like suggestions on where to book activities as Christmas gifts for them. They are interested in sailing and swimming with the dolphins.

Start with a general search on www.fla-keys.com That will give you a list of what is available and you can fine tune after that based on their interests...

We always enjoy snorkeling since the reef is so amazing.

I think they'd enjoy one of the sunset sails. There are several good ones - I'd avoid any of the catamarans, though, unless they'd enjoy a party atmosphere more than a sail. The current favorite (and newest to Key West) is the America 1. We sailed on her predecessor several years ago and it was a wonderful sail in every way. Unfortunately, the current America is charging nearly double what her competition is - I'm not sure but I think it's $90 a person.
If you'd prefer not spending that much there are others that are good, too. Other options are Western Union, Jolly Rover (that's a BYOB sail, but alcohol in plastic, not bottles), Appledore and Floridays - a much smaller boat that doesn't seat many more than 20. Floridays used to be our favorite but it's getting a little old-looking now. For swimming with dolphins, I think their best bet would be the Dolphin Research Center. It'd require a drive up the keys, but has a really wonderful reputation. For tons more information, I'd encourage you to look at the Key West Forums section on tripadvisor.com. They have lots of destination experts (I used to be one) and many live in Key West. The information is speedy, too. Good luck! I hope the honeymooners love Key West as much as we do! |
The Floridays has just returnerd this past year from a complete refurbishing and is brand new. They have a nice champagne sunset sail.

Thanks, Peter! For those of you who aren't familiar with Peter, he's the best authority about anything on the water in Key West.

Now if they'd just bring back the Caribbean Spirit and the Looe Key trip on the Island Express.....

The sunset cruises are great, Jolly Roger or one of the other schooners. |
