HONEYMOON SUGGESTIONS IN THE NORTHEAST?
 

Does anyone have a suggestion for a honeymoon on a
budget in early September? Preferably in the NE
United States.

I was considering the Poconos but do not know the area well.

I live in Scranton.Resorts in Poconos are way over rated,Expensive and not kept up well. A nice part to vist in the state of Pa. is the Lancaster area,nicer resorts better food.check on the Lancaster sites on the web

How about New England? It won't be foliage season quite yet, but the tourists will be fewer, and you can be in the mountains or on the beach in a matter of a couple of hours; there's all the historic stuff in Boston too (visit www.boston.com); Yankee Magazine also has a web page--I think it's www.newengland.com.

I ditto Boston and would suggest a couple of nights in a romantic bed and breakfast on Martha's Vineyard. My husband and I honeymooned here in November and loved it. Also, Montreal is VERY romantic.

Try the Jersey shore. Cape May would fit the bill. You may be able to get good rates after Labor Day.

I highly recommend Vermont! Depending on when in September you come, and how far north you go, you could very well see some beautiful foliage!(if that interests you) And if you and your fiancee are the outdoorsy type, it would be great time for an early fall hike. Vermont is also small enough so that you could travel around and see several different areas.

Beach Bum is right! Cape May, NJ has a slew of great Victorian Bed and Breakfasts that are very romantic. The rates will be better after Labor Day and the weather is still great. You're also not far from Atlantic City, if you like that sort of thing.

My husband and I live in New England and have been all over (we honeymooned on Nantucket, but it's pricey). The rates on Cape Cod go down right after Labor Day (which is early this year). I highly recommend Chatham. The best (and most reasonable) place to stay is the Chatham Tides 508-432-0379. It's just outside of town, but secluded and RIGHT on the ocean in a gorgeous setting. All accomodations have kitchenettes.

Rockport, MA is a terrific seaport town and a VERY reasonably priced place to visit. A bargain, in fact. Very romantic. Lots of good restaurants and art galleries.

We've also been to Cape May and HIGHLY recommend this. The rates here go down right after Labor Day also. So much to see and do in Cape May and in the area (Atlantic City, Wildwood, gardens...). We stayed at the Carroll Villa. Very reasonable and incredible breakfast is included on their fabulous porch with a view of the ocean at the end of the street. Terrific value for the dollar. Cape May has wonderful, romantic restaurants and a nightclub with dancing at one of the hotels. Be sure to take the ferry to Lewes if you go to Cape May.

Another fabulous spot is Ogunquit, Maine. Reasonably priced seaside resort town (among many much more expensive in the area). Can recommend the most economical B&B and motel. Wonderful restaurants. Beautiful oceanside walking trail.

Portsmouth, NH is also a wonderful seaport town with lots and lots to see and do.

Quebec City is a very romantic city. And if the Canadian dollar remains low, you would be take advantage of the exchange rate. <BR><BR>Boston is also a great city in the fall.

Avoid the Poconos, unless you're camping. The resorts are cheesy and overpriced.<BR><BR>Try the Berkshires in western Massachusetts. Specificially the Red Lion Inn (forget the town. Lenox? It's been mentioned in other posts).

try montreal. you can probably get a direct flight. you save 40% on exchange. with all the french it seems like europe. great restaurants. rent a bike and cruise out to the islands onto the grand prix track. the ritz has packages for $120 u.s. a night. or try a 200 year old inn in the old part of the city - Pierre du Calvet auberge. only eight rooms with a terrific restaurant. be brave the weather is about 70 f. in sept. bonjour!

All these suggestions are good, but I'd go with either Montreal or Quebec City since the exchange rate is so good you can really get the most from your budget. Although I've never been to QC (but have heard nothing but great things) I can vouch for Montreal. The old town is very quaint and has a very European feel, and the Centreville area has lots of great restaurants, bars and shopping. The Metro (the subway) is unsurpassed in ease and efficiency and can get you anywhere you want to go. There's even an amusement part (Le Ronde) if you're so inclined. Almost everyone speaks English and can switch back and forth between French and English perfectly, so no worries there. Definitely give it some thought.
