Honeymoon out west.
 

Planning to Honeymoon out west July 16-28. Flying into the best centralized location to rent a car and drive to as many sites as possible. We want to hike a couple of days. Prefer to stay in a cabin.

We would also like to ride horses.

Colorado = Denver
Arizona/Utah = Las Vegas or Phoenix
California = LA or SF
Oregon/Washington = Portland or Seattle

Lots of great options out west!

Phoenix - Book a cabin near Sedona or Flagstaff. Sedona has beautiful hiking opportunities, Slide Rock, etc. Flagstaff has the observatory, hiking, and both are relatively close to the Grand Canyon. Lots of other neat sites around there as well. These are a couple hour drive from Phoenix.

LA/Orange County - Book a cabin near Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear. Less "sights" to see up there, but it's beautiful and there's obviously a million things to do and see down in the cities.

San Diego - Not sure about the cabin situation there, but you can't go wrong with La Jolla, Old Town, Seaport Village, Balboa Park, etc.

Denver - Lots of options for cabins in a driveable distance, plus up in the ski resorts you can do hiking, ride the ski lifts, alpine slides, and down in the city there's the Denver Mint, and all of the normal city sites.

Santa Fe - So pretty, small town, hiking opportunities. I don't know what "sites" are around there though. I haven't been since I was a kid. Albuquerque isn't that great, but cheaper to fly into.

For July, I'd recommend Denver or Seattle. The Southwest will probably be too hot for hiking, and the California Coast may be too crowded. Fly into one of those two cities, rent a car, drive into the mountains, and then spend a wonderful honeymoon at a cabin or a resort. Unlimited hiking is near both of these cities.

Fly into Denver. Rent a car and drive 1.5 hrs to Devil's Thumb Ranch (DTR).

Or, fly into Denver. Go downtown and maybe stay one night at the Brown Palace. Take Amtrak to Fraser, CO, where DTR will pick you up. Take DTR shuttle back to the train station in Fraser.

Fort Stevens at the mouth of the Columbia River would be great.
If you do come to Oregon, please check out the waterfalls and the Columbia Gorge east of Portland.

Also look at Albuquerque. You can visit the whole four corners area easily from there.

Sorry, but I'll never understand why people want to visit the four corners area. Especially on a honeymoon.
