Honeymoon in Maui and Kauai
My fiance and I are planning a honeymoon to Hawaii in July 2002. We are interested in spending the first week in Maui and the second week in Kauai. We are looking for suggestions of places to stay that would be special without breaking the bank. What would you recommend and what promotions or packages should we keep our eyes out for?

Depends what you like to do: We stayed on the North Shore in Kauai in a "Guest Studio" across from Tunnels Beach that was great. We found the North Shore beautiful. Great for hiking, snorkeling, sunning, etc. Not a lot of "Night life". If you're looking for entertainment on Kauai, you would probably be better south at Poipu or in Kapaa. We have also stayed at the Westin in Maui (took our teenage girls), Great lobby, grounds, pool area..rooms were dissapointing. Have stayed at Kaanapali Shores Condos in Maui. We found it to be a good value. Not much of a beach when we were there. Good luck..have a great honeymoon and many years!

I have spent much time planning my trip next year to Maui and hope that my initial research can help.
You say a lot by the fact that it is your fiance and not your family. There are many places that are either "must sees" or preferable if you have kids. I am referring to big pools with many kids doing whatever kids do in the pool.
There is a little secret about a Maui hotel--the Mariott Renaissance Hotel. It is very nice (look at the Rants and Raves on this site which rate it one of the highest). It is the only very nice hotel on Maui which accepts the entertainment card for 50% off available rooms' rack rate. We found a room rate of approximately 300 dollars which was well below the rack rate of 400 dollars. I called for the entertainment card rate was 200 per night.
The Marriott in Kauai is supposed to be very nice and not as expensive as the Hyatt Regency or the Princeville. We decided to stay on Lanai's Manele Bay because you can take a ferry over and I feel that if Bill Gates gets married on Lanai, how bad can it be? You can take a shuttle there instead of a plane. It is great for honeymooners but there is not much to do. Kauai is nice because certain things like helicopter rides are supposed to be awesome.
One note of caution. I found that people recommend hotels because of how beautiful they are or by the service involved. If you look closer, you may find that certain hotels like the Ritz on Maui or the Princeville on Kauai get A LOT more rain than other parts of their respective islands. When I call people on this, they have the universal answer...it rains more, if you are concerned about that. OF COURSE I CARE ABOUT THAT. I hear that July is not as bad as Jan or Feb, but keep it in mind.

Hi Allison,
My wife and I honeymooned in August of 2000 in Kauai and Maui. We booked through a travel agent and we were able to get a pretty good deal by choosing the same hotel on both islands. We stayed at the Hyatt in Poipu on Kauai, and at the Hyatt in Maui. We were able to get a free night on each island, with breakfasts included. We made sure we ate plenty for breakfast, had a little snack around lunch time and only really spent money at dinner. Most restaurants are pretty pricey. The Hyatt in Kauai was the most beautiful hotel I had ever seen. Perfect for a honeymoon. It does tend to rain more on the northside of Kauai, but there really isn't much rain at all in the summer. The Hyatt in Maui was in Kaanapali which was right next to Lahaina. We found that we spent most nights in Lahaina as there were plenty of shops, restaurants, and entertainment. I hope you have as much fun as we did, it was great!! I would highly recommend a helicopter tour of the Na Pali coast on Kauai. We went on a helicopter with no doors and it was breathtaking!! Have fun!
