Honeymoon in Hawi'i
 

Hello! We will be spending 12 days on our honeymoon in Hawai'i in early August. It's my first time, my fiancee's 2nd time.

I'm using my airline miles, and booked the trip a little too late, so I had to fly into Honolulu and out of Kona to make it work. (We're also spending 2 nights in San Francisco during our outbound)

Here is our proposed itenitary:

Day 1-2: Honolulu
Day 3-6: Maui
Day 7-9: Kauai
Day 10-12: Kona

Do you think this is too many islands? The general advice is I've seen here is one island for less than 7 days.

Seems like to me that we may want to spend more time in Maui than in Kauai (somebody said that would be a good 25th Anniversay location)

It's too many by at least one and probably two, IMHO. Since you have to come to back from Kona, either do Oahu and the Big Island, or go straight through Oahu to either Maui or Kauai, and from there to the Big Island.

Yes. I think you are trying to see too many islands.

6 days Maui/6 days BI is what I would suggest.

You should do 2 or 3 islands max.

Oahu has more to see & do than any other island.

As you are already going into Oahu & out of Big Island, you can do those 2 islands & make plans to come back again in the future for the other 2.

I'm voting with the others. Too many islands. Suggest only two. My crystal ball says Maui and Big Island (since you're flying out of there anyway). Come back again soon and do the other two.

I'd drop off at least one island from your list. I've been to all the islands and I love them all! If I were planning my own honeymoon to Hawaii for 12 days, I'd probably go to Maui and Kauai and split the time evenly.

One of my readers (at my unbiased Hawaii travel advice blog) recently returned from his 2 week honeymoon in Hawaii. He did Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island. He wrote a Hawaii Honeymoon Do's and Don'ts for GoVisitHawaii.com and he advises that you don't try to do too many islands. Here's a link to that article he wrote with some pretty good insight:

Congratulations, we also spent our honeymoon in Hawaii (almost 16 years ago).

I agree with the others...two islands will be best. Which two would depend on what you like to do. Each island has its own personality. There is quite a bit to explore on each island so 6 days on each would work. Trying to hit all 4 islands wastes precious time at the airports each time you move.

Personally, we LOVE Kauai because it is the least commercialized and most beautiful. But if you are looking for the nightlife scene...Maui would fit your needs as they rollup the streets early on Kauai.

Seems like the two islands that stick out right now are Maui and Big Island. Besides the nightlife on Maui, what would you say are popular things to do on the island?

Have you done any reading about either of those islands? I'd suggest picking up a guidebook or two and giving it a look-see.

I agree with everyone else; you're trying to hit too many islands. I'd probably do a split of Maui and the BI.

There is no night life on the Big Island.

Popular things to do: lava viewing, Volcanoes Park, kayak at Captain Cook, Mauna Kea observatory, Akaka Falls, Hawi, Hilo farmers market, Captain Beans dinner cruise in Kona.

We did Maui for our honeymoon and loved it; it offers a lot of activities like snorkeling at Molokini, the Road to Hana, the sunrise at Haleakala, whale watching during certain times of year, and the Old Lahaina Luau. If you decide to do the luau, book it well in advance because it sells out. If you do the BI, you might split your time between 2 areas since it's so big.
We stayed at the Hapuna Beach Prince - gorgeous beach there and then at the Kilauea Lodge to see the volcano. Loved Akaka Falls too.
