Honeymoon -- Drive from New Orleans to Charleston

Any ideas where to stop in between--it seems that there are so many choices and routes we could take! We are interested in Savannah and/or one of the Georgia islands--but I would like to stop somewhere between New Orleans and Georgia to break up the drive. Then I would plan on going to Savanna / islands. We like food, drink, history and scenery. Off the beaten path is absolutely fine as is small towns. We are open minded!!!

How long do you have? More time in Charleston. Stop along the coast--Pensacola/Biloxi?

Mobile, Savannah, Charleston

All have important historic districts, beautiful flowers in season, good food, and are hot and humid in the summer, not a problem if you are from NO!

We have about 8-9 nights. This will be mid to late April.

Ack has it. Just hit it for the coast. Do you have to go back to NOLA?

We plan to fly back from Charleston. I'm just concerned about the long drive from Mobile to Savannah......Any wonderful, idyllic romantic locales between the two?

Lots of beach places in the Florida panhandle. Try St. George Island or Seaside. Google them first to see if you like them.

There is also Wakulla Springs State Park which is quite secluded and different from the rest. Has a lovely old hotel/inn. A little bit closer to I10 than the others.

In addition, Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach right on the Atlantic and not far off I95. We just stayed at Amelia Island Plantation Resort--there were few people there (of course, it was Christmas) and they were running specials which made it quite affordable. Great food, lots of big old live oaks dripping with Spanish Moss, boardwalks into the marsh, close to funky Fernandina Beach. You can find a lot of privacy there.

I like the idea of Seaside, though I haven't been there. Maybe hat's why I like it!

Anyway, knowing how long you have makes this easier.

I haven't heard of Wakulla Springs but it sounds very interesting.

The April time will be wonderful for the flowering shrubs and trees in Charleston.
You have 8-9 days. One day to Mobile say. Mobile to Charleston is 600 miles. So if you stop X way along you are 3 days getting TO Charleston. Then you have 5 days to see Charleston and Savannah--doable but hurried. Changing hotels, driving between, etc.
I sort of wonder why you aren't flying RT. I guess you'll have a rental car to drive TO SC. There will probably be a dropoff charge, etc.
If this is just a road trip, then there are, of course, lovely places to stay rather than just go by.

We definitely could fly from New Orleans to Charleston--I was just thinking the drive would be a good experience.

Just seems to me that breaking it down to useable days, it may be better to fly and tour. It is a honeymoon and you want it to be relaxing, I think. If you are in NOLA then the nice gulf places are just a day or so away, and could make for a nice road trip later.
