Honeymoon... Big Island or Maui???

I just want to know other people's idea, recommendations, or at least what they think about having a honeymoon in Hawaii ( first time in Hawaii )... well, to be specific the Big Island or Maui??? What are the good and the bad???

We were married and honeymooned last year on Kauai and highly recommend it. Have also visited Maui and believe it is a good choice for a honeymoon. Unless your into active volcanoes or like driving I probably would not spend alot of time on the BI. If you are staying for any length of time (e.g. 10 days or more) would suggest splitting your time between Maui and Kauai. :S-

We split our honeymoon up between Kauai
and Maui. Three days Kauai and 7 days Maui. It worked out great. We started on Kauai which is slower paced and relaxing...perfect after the stress of the few weeks prior to a wedding. Then on to Maui which is a little more upbeat though still more relaxing than planning a wedding.

Next time we would do a little more time on Kauai. It was our favorite of the two (although we loved both and werent dissappointed).

i disagree with the poster who poo-pooed the big island. of all the island resorts, those on the big island are the most elegant, spacious and romantic. a popular honeymoon choice is kona village- no phones and your own polynesian huts! you have a coconut shell to summon your waiter, or whatever they use these days.
the other advantage is the virtual guarantee of sun in kona at the resorts.
other great places to stay are the four seasons, mauna lani, orchid at mauna lani, mauna kea and hapuna beach prince, depending on your budget.
maui is a god choice if you are younger and like organized activities with lots of other tourists, like luaus and booze cruises and day trips on buses. if that is your style, then you should book at room at kaanapali and enjoy the lively, yet not elegant, atomsphere.

My wife and I spent most of our honeymoon on the Big Island. I can't spead for Maui because we didn't go there, but we had a great time on BI. We're not the resort-type folks, so we spent three days at Waimea Gardens Cottages in Waimea, which is only about a 15-minute drive from the Kohala coast and the fabulous public beach at the Mauna Kea Resort. This was a great, private B&B. We did some hiking in the Waipio Valley and the Polulu Valley. We then drove around the north and west end of the island, through Hilo, and to Volcano Village. We stayed at the Kilauea Lodge (3 nights), and it was fabulous as well...great breakfasts, excellent dinners with a pretty good menu.

I can't speak for the resorts, so if that's your thing, I would expect you would be happy with either island. From friends, I've heard if you want beach resorts and seclusion since this is your honeymoon, they all give a resounding vote for Kauai.

Hotandsweaty presents a valid point about the upscale resorts on the BI. For the sake of boogie7, if you are OK on spending $300+ a night, then consider BI. :S-

Thanks guys for all the insight... I'm now kinda considering Kauai... but I think, based on your experiences, maybe Maui would be the best bet. Most likely at Kap. Bay Hotel.
