Honeymoon advise!
 

We are planning to honeymoon in Hawaii the first part of Sept for 2 weeks, and would really appreciate advise on our "time line". This is what we have planned so far:

2 nights in Honolulu at the Halekulani

6 nights in Kauai at the Grand Hyatt

2 nights in Lanai at the 4 Seasons at Manele Bay

2 nights in Mauai at the 4 Seasons Wailea

We sure would appreciate any fine tuning by the Fodorites. This is our first time in Hawaii. THANK YOU!!!

I think you're planning too many islands for the time you have. I would personally skip Lanai on this trip and spend 4 nights in Maui. When you travel from one island to another, it takes about 1/2 a day (between getting to the airport, waiting, flying, getting your car, and driving to your hotel).

In two weeks, we have done two islands and that's plenty. Don't waste time moving around so much IMHO. I'd recommend you stay in Kauai and Maui. Skip Honolulu and Lanai this time. You'll be back!

Well you'll get plenty of advice here! Some people will say that you have too many days on Kauai for the number of days you've alloted for the other islands. But not me!

Since you are spending a nice number of days on Kauai I can see maybe you might consider not going to Lanai and spending your time in Maui. I've been to Maui like 5 or 6 times and it's a great place. We took a day trip to Lanai and thought the trip was fun but we love Maui.

My advice is to stay put a little longer in fewer places. Hence I advise you to consider cutting down on the number of packs and unpacks that you will need to do.

I went too many places on my very short honeymoon. The second one a few years later was done with fewer "unpacks." Of course I was a little older at the time, but not much.

I went on a cruise this past Feb/March where we spent 2 days at each port, i.e. 2 days at Kauai port, 2 days at Maui, etc. I think you will see quite a lot but will be really busy. Also you should consider any flights needed. The flight will take up half a day or whole day. Then you only have a day left to spend there. I'd extend to 3-4 days per place.

Well since it is your honeymoon, I am guessing you are going for the resort vacation....

that is , mimimal exploring and lots of resort lounging.

For that your plan sounds wonderful. I have stayed at Manele and Maui 4 Seasons and love them both.

If however you are planning to do anything but a resort destination, and would like to explore the islands, this itinary is a bit aggressive.

I would also skip Lanai & spend the extra two days on Maui. Actually I would also drop a day from Kauai & add one more to Maui.

That would give you 5 nights each on Kauai & Maui & 2 nights Oahu.

I would drop two nights off Kauai, add them to Oahu, and drop Lanai and add that time to Maui. That would give you four nights on Oahu, Maui and Kauai ... perfect! :) Don't listen to those who deter you from more time on Oahu ... there's more to do there than any other island (and I'm not just talking about Waikiki ... ) have a great honeymoon. (I'll be there at the same time. Aren't we lucky! :-d )

My "good tip" although I haven't done it myself is the Trilogy catamaran cruise to Lanai -- everyone who does it says its great -- nice food on board, and when you get to Lanai they lay out a picnic on the beach -- some people stay at the beach to swim and snorkel, others take the trip into Lanai Town. Sounds like fun.

I loved our trip to Lanai on Trilogy. One of the best trips I've been on in HI.

Do you take this Lanai trilogy cruise from Mauai to Lanai?? Also--where is a favorite and rather authentic luau ?

Confirm firsthand with the front desk of your hotel destinations that the pools will be open and there will be no renovation shutdowns - just to be safe!

Whoops--I have no idea what this previous (pool) post is referring to --I am still interested in the Lanai trip and the luau information.

I was simply suggesting that you confirm with you hotels that there is no construction or pool closings scheduled during your stay, as september is a known downtime for renovations.

I have stayed on Lanai twice, if that helps. Once was by ferry, and the conditions were tempestuous

danen, yes, you take the Trilogy cruise from Maui to Lanai. I know they have a sailing from the Kaanapali area, they might also have one from the Wailea area. Here's their link.
