Homless by will in Kauai
 

My wife and I fell in love with Kauai and its peaceful energy while visiting couple years ago. Being kinda burned out with the life in the big city ( Chicago) we were thinking that we would love to spent some time ( about 2 or three months) in Kauai. We were thinking that would be an excellent idea to camp or buy a conversion type van. But before we take a leave of absence from work we would like to know what are the legal restriction or implication when it comes to leave in a tent for couple months :), and also what is the local culture regarding this aspect. We really don't wanna bother anyone, just spend some good time doing nothing.

A couple of months ago I ran into a woman who camped out in (I believe it was Maui) for many months. You might check with the local Chamber of Commerce or city hall on laws and ordinances.

Kauai has wonderful campgrounds, most run by the county. You must stay in a campground, and you must have a permit. Permits should be obtained far in advance of your visit. Illegal camping is prohibited, patrols are frequent, and fines are huge. There are restrictions on how long you can stay in any one campground.
I think it might be 10-12 days, as long as you are registered to move to another campground. Fees are very low..$5 per night or less. Most of the campgrounds are right on the ocean and all have restrooms, showers, BBQ's. I've driven by several of them. Anini Beach in the North and Salt Pond Beach in the South are both great places to swim. If you have a choice, I'd recommend going in the spring or fall, when campgrounds are less crowded. If you do a google search under "camping Kauai" you'll find lots of info, including who to contact for permits.

Yes, Walmart will let you RV for free but provide no facilities.

Campgrounds generally have about 2 week limits but you can move to another site.

Camping Permits are issued for the following County beach parks:
* Haena Park (closed every Monday from 10 am to 12 noon on Tuesday for maintenance)
* Hanalei Blackpot Park (Open Friday & Saturday only, closed Sunday thru Thursday)
* Anini Beach Park (closed every Tuesday from 10 am to 12 noon on Wednesday for maintenance)
* Anahola Beach Park (closed every Thursday from 10 am to 12 noon on Friday for maintenance)
* Hanamaulu Beach Park (Open Thursday, Friday & Saturdays only & certain school holidays, closed Sunday thru Wednesday)
* Salt Pond Park (closed every Tuesday from 10 am to 12 noon Wednesday for maintenance)
* Lucy Wright Park (closed every Monday from 10 am to 12 noon Tuesday for maintenance)

Tents are required
Camping permit fees are $3.00 per adult, per night for non-residents and free for residents of the State of Hawaii who can show proof of residency. Children under the age of 18 years are also free and must camp with at least one adult 18 years of age or older.

I don't know where you are going to buy a conversion van from.

But, make sure and respect local property. If you camp somewhere, make sure and approach the closest neighbor and get permission to stay. Places that seem isolated are often tended to an watched over by a local family. They do not take kindly to haveing people camp out without their permission. If they say no, be polite, and then move on.
