my favorite place in homer is the Land's End hotel and restaurant--it's right at the end of the peninsula--lots of boats go by, etc. IN fact, the whole jetty is quite interesting--looking at the various shops.

Teh drive up the hill overlooking the town is also pretty spectacular.

there are lots of flying options in homer--go see bears, etc. if you can get used to flying in these old small planes and not being too terrififed.

For a 1/2 day, take a boat. Its like $85/person and then any fish you catch, they prepare a frozen box for you to take home. (so frozen that I would suggest that you not rent a space in a refridge in Anchorage's airport while you wait for your flight.) There is salmon and halibit. YUMM.
(don't do more than a day, its a waste of time and is very tiring and possibly boring as they use gps to find the fish, cheaters!)
Definitely try to find a great spot by the water to the west, by the forest area and relax. Unwind. Watch for bald eagles that are bigger than my rotweiler.
The sun really doesn't go down in the summer, be sure to have a room with curtains, if you plan on sleeping or feeling like a human being. (*I slept on a couch while house sitting, no curtains ='d no sleep, but very cool bald eagles.)
Try to see the glaciers nearby.

I second the Skyline drive overlooking town. You might get a chance to watch an eagle coasting on the air currents. We did a short flightseeing over a glacier with Smokey Bay Air. The pilot turned around for a better view when he spotten a mountain goat (or may be it was a sheep!) The Pratt Museum is very interesting. If it's a Friday, visit the farmers market (they also have crafts).

Thanks...We are going the first week of Sept. We are doing the william sound tour, and the fjords, so didn't know if takinga boat to seldtovia (spelling) or another short activity would be fun. the bear trip sounds fun..but very expensive.....Marilee

I think the most you're going to see from Homer is his meeting up with Marge.

Seldovia was okay. It's a very small town. We did a package visit with the Boardwalk hotel that included the boat ride over and the flightsee back to Homer. Our morning return flight was delayed because of fog so we sat a long time in the hotel lobby waiting but opted to wait for the plane rather than take the boat back. The flight was really the highlight so I'm glad we didn't miss it. The boat ride is not as exciting as the one out of Seward but well narrated.

Hi Anyone,
This one of our destinations - Going to Homer. We'll be spending two nights there at a B&B on the Spit. What suggestions can be offered for the two days at Homer?
I heard this is the best place to visit on the Peninsula. Any info will be gladly accepted from restaurants, tours, picture taking, hiking or whatever is worthwhile for a short adventure. We'll be there around July 23rd of this upcoming summer.

We arranged for a half day kayak trip accross the bay from Homer and it was amazing. Otters played with our kayaks.

plenty to do. Pratt Museum is very nice. There are tidal pool walks.

You can take a trip to artsy Halibut Cove (Saltry Restaurant) or Seldovia.

I would definitely recommend visiting Halibut Cove. The boatride over is quite enjoyable. It goes past a bird rookery--can't remember what it's called--maybe Gull Island.

Halibut Cove is an artist's community. The only way to reach it is by air or by boat. You can walk around the boardwalks--very scenic. I think you can go over either in the morning or late afternoon. We went in the morning, and ate lunch at the Saltry. Wonderful food--and all of the food, plates--everything is locally grown/crafted.

Then you can also walk around, and peek in the various artists' studios.

A very enjoyable way to spend the day!

I recommend the Homestead restaurant in Homer. Get directions, as the restaurant is not located in the town itself. As for activities, there's sea kayaking, bear tours, boat fishing. Recommend staying at Ocean house Bed and breakfast, that's where I'll be staying in July. There's also the Pratt Museum in Homer.

We loved the Homestead too. Request a table with a view--lovely mountain vistas.

My favorite restaurants are: Two Sisters Bakery for breakfast and lunch and Fat Olives for dinner. Walk the shops around the spit. Visit the Alaska Islands & Ocean Visitor Center.

There are also a number of Russian villages in the area. Many of the buildings, especially the churches, are colorful onion-domed architecture. One or two of the villages have Russian crafts gift shops.

Check with the Vistor's Center on the hwy into Homer for locations and driving directions.

We'll be in Homer during the last week of August for a few days. Planning to do a kayak tour. Any suggestions as to which kayak tour is the best to take as we are beginners?

Do not recommend True North kayaking, probably the most high-profile kayak operator there. Their customer service is horrific.

We ended up going with another company there on the spit -- there are lots which provide water taxi service across to Kachemak Bay and also have small-group kayaking guides.
