Hollywood: Universal hotels vs. Renaaisance?
 

Looking for a base hotel to do Univ Studios during the day, and hang out and eat/shop at night. (Family of four, kids 10 and 13). Any major pros/cons between Universal City (city walk) and the Hollywood/Highland area? Looks about the same to me as far as stuff to do.<BR><BR>

I would stay at Hollywood/Highland if you want a different scene at night (Mann's Chinese, Musso and Frank's for dinner, funky movie memorbilia stores, lots of shops in the new mall complex that are more adult-friendly than kid-friendly). But, your kids may enjoy City Walk more - lot's of kid interest stores, plenty of dinner options to please everyone, bright neon lights, more of a contained space - then you all can get to your hotel quickly to relax.

I stayed at the Renaissance in May when I was in Hollywood for my bridal shower. It's pretty new, and very nice. A lot of tours, like the star home tours and such, leave from the Chinese Mann, so that is convenient, and there is a lot of shopping. I haven't really been to Universal City Walk, though I hear it is good for kids.

Universal City Walk might offer more appeal to the kids. While Hollywood has become safer in the past year, it's not as good as City Walk for walking around late at night.

I would opt for the beautiful Universal Hilton, especially a corner unit, if possible, as the location is much better (sits on top of a knoll). It was originally built as The Registry Resort, so it is NOT your typical Hilton at all. I would avoid the Hollywood area like the plague as it is still much too sleazy in MY opinion. It's okay for a visit (just park in one of the public lots near the Chinese Theatre), but I think you'll be glad to get back to the Hilton!! (By the same token, some of the visitors to Citiwalk are on the &quot;iffy&quot; side as well, so be forewarned, but it does have somewhat of a &quot;Vegasy&quot; feel to it!).

I live in LA and while the Highland &amp; Hollywood is nice, I think it all depends on budget etc. The Renaissance might be pricey. There is a Holiday Inn close to Universal which is owned by actress Beverly Garland on Vineland. You are a few minutes to Universal and only a 5-10 minute drive to Hollywood etc. Here is the website. http://www.beverlygarland.com<BR><BR>If you stay at this hotel, you are also close to Studio City which is also loaded with restaurants. <BR><BR>Just my thoughts. <BR>
