Hollywood, Florida: Nice place to live?

Hi:
I am a New Yorker, just retired (presently single, 52)and was considering moving down to South Florida, as I am very much a "warm weather person". I've heard that the Hollywood, Fla area was quite nice to live and that the downtown area is booming with all kinds of new things with alot of residential and commercial building going on.
Is it a nice area to live? Much nightlife and entertainment? Walkable area? How is the public transit in that area? A lot of younger, singles there? (I am single and "young at heart") bars? good shopping? Is it a lively area with lots of "street activity" day and night (as a NY'er I'm accustomed to that) in other words, is it a "vibrant" area? etc.......

Rent first to see if you like it.
I've lived throughout the Sunshine State. Lived in south FL for three years and it was not for me.
Make sure you check out the west coast of FL also. Do you research...
