Hollywood & Disneyland Backstage Magic Tour

On the April travel thread in the Lounge some posters asked me to report back after my trip so here I am The tour is through Adventures by Disney and the big draw is exclusive access to of course, Disney! Tho what I considered wickedly expensive, the backstage access had my attention and being a "Dis-nut" when an on-line community decided they were going to go as a group, I could not resist.

I'm going to keep the report short as typically Disney doesn't get a lot of love on this forum, and true Disney fans know where they can get detailed reports on-line.

Arrived a couple of days early to acclimatize from east coast time and to check out a few things I'd hoped to do but missed on my visit to the LA area last spring. The Fairfax Farmers Market was as wonderful as I expected it to be and I feasted on Mexican delights from Loteria Grill and super-sized long johns from Bob's Donuts, not necessarily in that order!

I then bussed to Griffith Observatory, picking up a 25cent shuttle from Vermont/Sunset metro station. I can't believe this amazing place is has free admission! I timed my arrival to hear one of the Apollo 13 40th anniversary special lectures and found it very interesting. Wanting to support the organization, I donated and bought a ticket to one of their films. Unfortunately it was cloudy that day so no telescopes were out. However, even with the overcast skies the views from here are spectacular.

The next day friends, who also flew in for the Disney tour, and I headed out to Warner Bros Studios in Burbank for their tour. The 2.5 hour, $43 tour was worth it, especially as the 2nd floor of the museum was dedicated to Harry Potter. It even had the Sorting Hat that worked - you sat on a stool and a staff member put it on. We were sorted into different houses - I was put into Gryffindor - yah!!

We met up with a couple of gfs who had arrived that morning and ate lunch at the Studio Commissionary - an excellent choice of food stations (salad bar, pasta, panini, grill, sandwiches, etc.) at very reasonable prices too. I had a tasty "finished to order" lamb madras curry for $8.25.

We walked about 15 minutes to the studio where Ellen tapes, arriving at about 1:35pm for a 2pm check-in and about 75% of the audience was already there. It was the first taping of a tv show that I'd ever been to and was surprised at how "manufactured" it felt. I was nonplussed by the "cattle-call" feel of the multiple id checks & document verifications, various lines, holding corrals and security screenings. Still it was a new and interesting experience. Afterwards many from my tour group asked me what gift we received - apparently they give out audience gifts? - only a few young ladies who were asked to dance in the aisles got a t-shirt.

That nite about 10 of us who had arrived early in LA met up with some local friends for dinner at Yamashiro. The restaurant was someone else's suggestion and I was happy to accept their invitation to join them as the setting alone looked intriguing. I expected the food to be overpriced and sub-par. I am delighted to report the food was very good! Everyone enjoyed their meals and the portions were much larger than I expected; I felt there was value to their pricing. I ate sushi for my appy & entree, including a "Darth Vader roll" made of black rice! Several in our party, like me, are veteran sushi eaters and we were happy to find some of their inventive sushi ingredients were unfamilar even to us (e.g., Kaiware - sprouted daikon radish seeds, Yamagobo - pickled burdock root). The hilltop ambiance was matched with superb service.

The Disney tour started the next day and was 2 nites in Hollywood and 3 nites in Disneyland. Lodging was top-notch: staying at the Renaissance in Hollywood and the Grand Californian in Disneyland. Both hotels are well appointed with nice amenities, Aveda & H20, respectively.

The first day of the tour started with an early evening reception in the Renaissance followed by dinner at Trastevere Ristorante Italiano at the adjoining Hollywood & Highland complex. A lighthearted Disney trivia game, complete with contestant podiums, buzzers and MC provided entertainment between the appetizers that were awaiting us on the tables, and our main courses being served. We were given a private room but the seating was quite tight, still the excitement of beginning the tour and chatting with our (new) friends made for a good start.

Afterwards, a few of us headed to Uwink for drinks. Uwink is a neat concept for an informal restaurant - customers can order food & drink right from screens in front of them at their tables, and also on the same screens play games including against others at your table or others in the restaurant. Not knowing a group would end up there at night, I was there for lunch and the tasty crudités & warm pita hummus dip was definitely large enough to share; my friend said her salad was enough for 3 people!

Day 2 of the tour started with a private opening of the Disney Soda Fountain for breakfast followed by a history tour of El Capitan including an amazing performance of its Wurlitzer organ, watching the pre-show for Alice in Wonderland, going onstage to see the various organ pipes and stage scrims, and going downstairs to see the props from the same film.

We then headed over for a tour of the Masonic Temple next door, also home to the Jimmy Kimmel show where we toured the editing, sound, dressing and green rooms, and were allowed onstage of the set - I even stood on the "star" that designates the monologue spot...LOL!

Jeez Louise - I said I was going to be brief...what happened??!! Well, I'll post this first incase I lose it all...

Enjoy-la!

Next was one of the reasons for taking this tour: a visit to the Jim Henson Studios which does not conduct public tours. I've been a lifelong Muppets fan and to see be able to see the Creature Shop was going to be mindblowing...LOL! This did not disappoint even tho most of the puppets are in NY for the Puppet Up! show. Our tour guide was the fabulous Grant Baciocco, who is also the host of the official JHS podcast.

The historic site (used to be owned by Charlie Chaplin) looks like a row of cottages from the street, and props is given to CC by Kermit who stands high atop the gates in CC's tramp costume. Amazing that we were able to hold an Emmy, take pics with one of the dinosaurs from the Flinstones movie and even had a visit with one of the puppets!

The wonderful volunteers at the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society made Walt Disney's barn & miniature train available for us to visit and ride - they were incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming!

We were then coached back to the Renaissance with dinner & the evening on our own. The ABD Guides had 12 tickets to the Jimmy Kimmel show that nite and names were picked raffle style. My roomie was the first one drawn and we decided to go together - it was a fab time.

We were in the VIP queue for about 30 min and seated first in a reserved, clear-view, centre stage section. The crowd control/seating staff all looked like club bouncers. Although the producer-types made us practise our cheering as well, it felt like this show appreciated the audience a lot more, including having comedian, who does a nightly set at the Comedy Club, warm up & entertain the crowd for close to an hour.

Afterwards, most of the group headed to In N Out, many for the first time, for great burgers and continued laughs. Our walk back to the hotel required a stop for the most amazing cream puffs at Beard Papa in the Hollywood & Highland complex.

Another early rise for the hotel's breakfast buffet, Twist. The next tours at Imagineering, shopping at employee-exclusive Mickeys of Glendale, Disney Archives, Disney Studios and Legends Plaza were simply incredible - an action packed, sensory overload, mind-dazing day for Disney fans. We then coached to the Grand Californian Hotel at Disneyland!

This is an aritisan hotel and if one ever stays there be sure to take the Art of the Craft tour to get a true appreciation of the thought and craftmanship that went into the hotel. Most of the pieces are one-of-a-kind and the artisan needs to reproduce it if it needs to be replaced.

After settling in and freshening up the group walked through Downtown Disney to a welcome reception at Steakhouse 55...how lovely! After a leisurely dinner, we were led thru the parks and backdoored onto Haunted Mansion for a private "ride thru"...I've never done HM as it will be too scary for me so I sat this out but others said it was fabulous to have it all to themselves. Next was a private ride on Finding Nemo Sumbarine ride, which we grounded due to our weight...LOL!

Then we were on our own after being given 5 magic fastpasses to use on any rides that used the FP system. The parks closed at midnite and we were close to closing it down!

Our first full day at Disneyland was bursting with activities and sights: entrance to the park before it opened to the public, breakfast at Club 33 - a private function arranged by our group outside of ABD, backstage area of the Indiana Jones ride where we saw how the ride vehicles work and then we rode the ride, discussion of the history of It's a Small World, presentation of steam engines by the engineers who maintain and run the railroad, visted the fireworks area, discussion of the parade floats at that warehouse, walk thru of the former Pope residence - who were the original horse trainers of Disneyland and visted the corral area. All this before lunch at the Big Thunder BBQ!

Fascinating stuff klam_chowder!

I'm not by any means a Disney die hard fan but I do enjoy it in small doses. We will be celebrating my DH's 50th birthday at Disneyworld in a few weeks.

Thx for the feedback sassy_cat - good to know 1 person will have read this You prolly already know this, but be sure your DH picks up a "I'm Celebrating" button and wears it around on his birthday...he'll get lots of extra attention! Have a fab trip!

***

After lunch we began with small groups round robin'ing visiting Walt's apartment above the firehall, riding on the Lilly Belle - the train car Walt envisioned hosting VIPs, experiencing the refurbished Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, private boat ride on Pirates of the Caribbean, singing along to the Enchanted Tiki rooms - and when the attraction finished we stayed behind to get an up close look at Orphilia one of the original animatronic flowers, and a tour of the absolutely gorgeously decorated and completely themed Dream Suite.

After being given 5 magic fastpasses for the day, we were on our own. They had reserved seating for those who wanted to see the parade and it was fab to show up at the last minute and have a prime viewing spot.

After that a bunch from the group, rode some attractions and then headed over to DCA to check out the Food & Wine Festival offerings. The parks closed at midnite and we pretty well closed it down again

Bright eyed and bushy tailed, we met for breakfast at Goofy's Kitchen. Then we had early entry again, this time to DCA where we headed straight to Soarin' over CA - a special treat on a private ride. While half the group rode, the other half was able to go UNDER the floor and watch the riders thru the metal perforated screen!! Amazing to see the technology and I was very surprised at how high the seats actually moved - 50ft! Fun to see where all the flip flops and sunglasses fall down to too...LOL!

The group then headed over to Animation Studio and joined in a screening of Turtle Talk with Crush and tried our hand at drawing Mickey. After a private ride of Tower of Terror, we again received 5 magic fastpasses to use - today was our last full day together and we had time to ourselves before our farewell dinner.

A bunch from the group rode a attractions all afternoon punctuated only with more Food & Wine Festival offerings before returning to the hotel to freshen up before our last dinner together.

The farewell dinner was spectacular!!! Besides an elegant setting and a lovely buffet, we saw a slideshow of our trip and Mickey & Minnie even came to say goodbye and pose for pics - how fun! However, the most amazing highlight was having Disney artist and historian, Statia Martin.

Each party was asked to join her at the front and she would sketch whatever Disney character the guest requested, chatting all the while she sketched about the character's history, etc. When she was done, she dedicated it to the guest in the character's handwriting!! It is hard to describe how wonderful this was...these keepsakes will be framed and proudly displayed I am sure.

We had one more reserved seating for the fireworks. I was delayed after dinner and it was truly magical to, at the last minutes, race through the park to the roped off area by the hub and be able to watch the fireworks go off all around.

Of course the group had to close out the event with rides til the park said goodnite...lol!

The next morning was breakfast at your leisure at the hotel's Storyteller's Cafe buffet. Sadly, we said our goodbyes as people were leaving that day.

This is a recap of our tour but each tour slightly different depending on the park schedules, attraction refurbs, and of course the group's preferences. We felt ours was extra special as it was all from a "Disney community".

Generally speaking the meals were fabulous on this trip - keeping in mind they were trying to feed a group of 46 in short timeframes so we could do as much as possible. The buffets were excellent and offered lots of (too many!) choices.

As I prefer independent travel even for Europe & Asia, I've only taken one tour before (another exclusive access one to stay on the tundra to watch the polar bears in Churchill, MB), so I had a bit of concern in joining a tour that would tell me when & where & how long I could eat, use the facilities and stand to take photos. My concerns were unfounded: the itinerary is exceptionally well thought out, the food and accommodations top notch, and the unsung heros so far are the ABD Guides.

We primarily had 2 Guides for our group, Michael & Jaime. Both with very different personalities but who showed remarkable flexibility, patience and responsiveness to our group. Moving a large group through crowded spaces is a difficult task, especially with the time constraints. They did a fabulous job with the pace and also ensuring they kept track of the group members at the back. One would always wait for the stragglers and walk them back to the group.

They remained composed at all times - even when our bus left 45 min late one morning. They managed the group, shared good stories, were inclusive and showed kindness that went beyond the call of duty. When I think back on it, now I have a better appreciation of all that they did to keep the tour seamless. True professionals.

We also had another Guide join us part-time for our time in Disneyland Resorts, and he too was effortless in his professionalism. Most of the tour stops had a "local experts" conduct the tour, and all of them were extremely knowledgeable and personable.

I've since taken a look at other ABD tour offerings and due to their price points, I would probably continue with my independent travel - but it was relaxing to let others do all the thinking, checking and adjusting about logistics, accomodations, etc. on this trip!

I would recommend this tour to anyone who has a special love for the land of talking mice and ducks. It's a jam-packed, activity-filled tour with lots of walking. The exclusive access to sites usually unavailable to the public make this tour worth it. I love the history of Walt Disney and his company, and the details in the park and its attractions so it was wonderful to be able to tour the usually off-limit areas, see how some of the logistics of the parks work, and learn more stories about Walt and Disneyland. It was fun to share this experience with others who also have this bent. Have a magical day!

Enjoy-la!

I really enjoyed your trip report, too! I would love to do that tour someday. Would you mind telling what "Disney Community"? Is it through the DISboards?
