Holland America Alaska Trip

Looking into a land and cruise trip through Holland America cruise line. Has anyone used them in the past. Haven't booked yet so if there are others we're interested. Going August 05.

I did a sea/land trip with HA about 5 years ago and absolutely loved it. Sailed from Vancuvor B.C. to Seward (1 week) then a week on land..2 nights in Anchorage, 2 nights in Denali and 2 nights in Fairbanks. Cruise was great, great food, activities, scenery and excursions at the ports we stopped at I didn't care as much for the land part. Too much of a "canned" tour for me. If I had the opportunity to do it again I'd do the cruise but set up my own journey into land. If you're cruising north I'd suggest getting a cabin on the starboard (right) side of the ship, that way you always have the coastal views and not open ocean, if your sailing southbound get a cabin on the port (left) side. Regardless what you decide you're bound to love it. Alaska is beautiful and unforgettable

I've used Holland America for a European Capitals cruise several years ago. Every aspect of the cruise was great--they are one of the best.

We took trip in 97, cruise was great, land was OK. In 04 we rented car and stayed at B&B's and enjoyed it much more, and cheaper. Same old story for tours, it seems you spend too much time in areas that don't appeal to you and not enough time in areas that appeal to you. Enjoy your trip, no matter which way you go you will love it.

I too am no fan of cruisetours. Way to costly for what little you get. Group travel is lacking in Alaska and you miss out on plenty. Easy to go on your own if so inclined?? BUT most important- if you do go on a cruisetour- go for as long as you can afford- at least 7 days add on. Any shorter has too much time in transit compared to time at destinations. You also miss everything in between that may be of interest. Meals are not included budget 50% more than at home to allow a cushion. Understand that NONE of the cruisetours get very far into Denali Park and definately this is one place where the farther you go the more opportunity you have for wildlife. The shuttles are also 1/3 the cost of the tour buses. My min. distance is Eielson mile 66, Tundra Wilderness tour is mile 53.
