HOLIDAY INN SOUTH BEACH

Has anyone had any experiences at this property? I can't really find a review. I will be there one night before driving to Key West and possibly 4 days after Key West. I am looking forward to responses from the SOBE experts.

Here is a link to some reviews on the Holiday Inn in South Beach:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...h_Florida.html

It's a slight bit north from most of the action, maybe 2 or 3 blocks, and one of the advantages is they provide free parking onsite, although you don't need a car in South Beach. You'll be right by Lincoln Road and the upper end hotels around 17th St.

Thanks so much! I finally got to Trip Advisor. I am new at this and I am not quite sure what to think. There is such a rage of experiences. I sure don't like the thought of musty smelling room........I wonder if this is really the case. Any other thoughts about this?

The more I think about the 'musty' rooms, the more I want to think of other hotels in the SOBE area. Sure wish I could get a response about this issue.

I stayed at the Blue Moon when I went to South Beach. No "musty" rooms, very nice place and in the middle of the action. You can get a really good deal on this hotel if you check quikbook.com or on paymetravel.com. I had a rate of $75 per night, but since this is high season, you'll probably see rates closer to $100.

Two places I was told to avoid was the Best Western and the Breakwater.

There is nothing wrong at all with the Holiday Inn South Beach. It is on the very northern end of South Beach. Quick walk to Lincoln Road Mall and a little further to the deco distric. You are very close to my favorite hotel bar, The Sky Bar at The Shore Club.

What are you looking for in South Beach? If you want to be in the middle of the deco madness, stay between 5th and 14th on Ocean Drive. Keep in mind, these hotels are not ocean front but across the street from Lummus Park which is ocean front.

A much nicer hotel for similar money would be the Doubletree Surfcomber. It is on 17th Avenue and oceanfront.

I have just checked out the Blue Moon and will check out the Surfcomber, also.
My Miami Beach experiences were in the '50s. Our family would stay at the Fountainbleau. I haven't been back to Miami for years.
I am looking for a room for one night. I will then be driving to Key West for about 5 days. After that I have another 5 days or so in the area. I am looking for ideas. Maybe it would be better if I started on my way to Key West and stayed farther south than SOBE.
Thanks for ALL your suggestions.

I could give you more suggestions, but first I would need to know a few things:

1. When are you travelling?
2. What is your price range?
3. What are you looking for in that one night?

I ask the last question because if you're older South Beach isn't for everyone. I'm 29 and I found it too superficial for my tastes, but still had a good time. If you want a beach, then I say go for it. Otherwise you can do just as well in other parts of Miami, such as Coconut Grove, Coral Gables and Kendall.

I arrive in Florida mid Dec and will stay for about 12 days.....just till after Christmas. I am looking for an upbeat time. I like "very nice" places. My friends say I should have been verrrrrrrrrrrry rich. I am 50ish and "with it". I like to people watch, but I also like to relax. Although I go to bars, I am really not into the drinking scene. As for price.......I love deals.

For December, it's going to be hard finding deals in Florida, since this is high season, and part of your vacation will be thrown close to Christmas week which will throw rates through the roof.

Your best bets might be to check the Marriott there (through their website), also check Travelzoo.com, I recently saw some good deals on some of the hotels in Miami that were good until the end of the year.

Worst case scenario, try bidding on priceline.com, but check biddingfortravel.com to get an idea of what some of the hotels are going for. And as always in my opinion, as I research things to death, check whatever hotel you choose on tripadvisor.com.

More hotels I just thought of was the Winterhaven, although the rooms are supposed to be very small, it is on Ocean Drive, and the Hotel Clinton which is new (opened in July) but it's on Washington Ave, 2 blocks from the beach.

Check daily as the rates have a tendency to change all the time!

missjanna...........ty ty you have alot of good suggestions. I really do appreciate that. I also like to research places. You know so much. Do you live in the Miami area? What do you think of Wyndham properties? They seem to be offering quite a few specials.

Actually, I'm in NYC.

The only Wyndham properties I know of in Miami (which I believe there are 3) is the one in the 40's which while it's supposed to be nice is about a mile north of the action. The other 2 are the one by the airport, which usually has great deals, and I would only recommend if you have a car. However, parking in South Beach is a royal pain in the butt unless you are willing to spend for a garage.

The other I know of is the Wyndham Grand Bay in Coconut Grove which is supposed to be a resort like atmosphere and good deals can be found.

I like the Wyndham chain personally, especially if you join their Wyndham By Request program, which will get you such extras as choice of beverages and snacks and express check in.

I've been to the Miami area about 4 times in the past 2 years. Only actually stood in a hotel this year, but I did so much research, I still have all my notes and guide books! ;-)

Have only stayed in Ft. Lauderdale twice, and neither time was near the airport. First time stayed at the Sheraton Yankee Trader, which I was not crazy about, but it was close to the beach and the nightlife. The other was the Travelodge on North Ocean Blvd. in Lauderdale By The Sea which I found to be fine and cheap!!

By the airport, I would check into the Best Western, the Hilton, the Doubletree and the Hampton Inn.

Also, I hope you know that the drive to Key West from Miami is easily almost 4 hours on a good day. Even worse if you drive down on a Friday or Saturday and back on a Sunday!

On those days, you will be better off driving. The cost of a ticket into Key West can be pretty steep, as it's not a large airport. And the scenery along the drive more than make up for the time!! It's pretty dead for the first hour or so, mostly run down looking areas, but once you get around Key Largo, the scenery changes!

Or, you could do what we just did. Get a one day rental on a car, drive to Key West, dump the car, then fly back or Miami or Ft. Lauderdale. I just checked one way fares and they range from $80.00-115.00. Not that pricy. That way you can enjoy the drive down the keys, maybe take Card Sound Road and stop at Alabama Jack's. But, you don't have the hassle that comes from driving back up the keys in time to catch a plane.
