Holiday Inn, Govt. center, Boston

Hi,
I am visiting Boston in November for two nights and am looking for a good hotel, near the centre of theatres/shopping/sights etc for around 150$ a night.
I got a rate of 133.95 in the Holiday Inn, Government centre, but wondered if the area is central?
Has anyone stayed there?
any suggestions for other hotels? Or for websites- aside from Priceline and Hotwire - that would offer good deals on Boston hotels? I would prefer a website where I can book a specific, named hotel, rather than risking the priceline option.
Would appreciate any help.
Many thanks.

That Holiday Inn is not REAL close to anything, other than Mass Gen & Shriners hospitals .... BUT the places you'll want to go in Boston are so compactly located that you'll still be "close enough" to most things.

Right across the street is Beacon Hill. JFK Plaza/Government Center / Fanual Hall /Quincy Market a short walk to your east. There's a Red Line a few blocks west(MGH/Charles), a Blue Line T station (Bowdoin) very close to your east, and Blue/Green/Orange a few blocks further east (Govt Center). The area's pretty safe, on a wide street.

That location is OK. You're within easy walking distance of the Quincy Market/Fanueil Hall. Boston Common, Boston Public Garden and the Back Bay and Newbury St are just up & over Beacon Hill. That's a very decent rate. You can take the "T" to the theatre district but careful walking around that area after the show. Harvard Square is just 3 stops away on the Red line. That's about the best rate you will get for the Boston area. I think you're fine there. SKIP the Cheers bar. It's the biggest tourist trap in the City. Try LEMONCELLA in the North End on North Street (1 block from Hanover) excellent Italian! Have fun in my hometown!

Hi,
Thanks for this information. I appreciate you taking the time.
I have also got a good rate for the omni parker hotel (actually a rate less than the holiday Inn, of 124+tax). Any one know anything about the hotel? It's location?
Thanks

Now you're talking! That's a great, handy location and a historic hotel. Right in between Government Centeer and Boston Common, you can walk to almost anything.

Formerly known as the Parker House, this hotel has a few tiny rooms and some obsolete features, but lots of charm and good food. Namesake of the Parker House Roll, and famous past busboys include Ho Chi Minh and Malcolm X.

I think I'd take the Omni Parker, located almost on Boston Common. The rooms might be a bit smaller, but you're in a nicer hotel and more convenient location. See

The Parker House is wonderful, one of our favorites. Great location and wonderful menu in the bar (extensive list of Yankee comfort food).

Though, you really should consider Hotwire or Priceline. We just returned from a weekend at the Marriott Copley Place for $82/night via Priceline.

Winter rates in Boston are low. We've stayed at Le Meridien for as little as $105 (with Hotwire).

Another resource to try for Boston is www.cityres.com - you can pick the hotel, no prepayment required.

Hi,
Thanks for all these postings!
I am leaning towards the Parker Omni, although I would love to stay at the Meridien if I could get a good deal. The other one that interests me is NineZero, although the rate is above my 150 limit..
Any more suggestions are always welcome!

Nine Zero is a brand new boutique hotel, just over a year old and about a 3 minute walk from the Omni Parker House. The Omni Parker House is at the corner of School and Tremont Streets, and Nine Zero is on Tremont Street.

By the way, besides the Parker House Rolls being originated at the hotel, the other famous development there was Boston Cream Pie, which is really a cake.

Keep checking the Nine Zero web site, frequently there are specials under $150/night.

By the way, although Le Meridien is an elegant hotel, it is located in Boston's Financial District and the only close attraction to the hotel is the Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall. Also, in case you want to take the T, the closest stop is State Street on the blue line. The Financial District goes dark after 6pm. You would be better located at the Omni Parker House.

You might also try the Boston Hyatt which was formerly the Swiss Hotel. I believe that hotel in order to attract business is offering discounted rates.

An ideal place, right opposite the Copley Square subway stop, a walk to theaters is the Charlemark Hotel on Boylston St.

Hi,
Thanks Leslie, I hadn't realised that Le Meridien was in a business district- the location of the Omni and NineZero sounds better for what we want.
Cigalechanta: I will check out the Charles Mark..
Thanks
