Holiday dinner: Rum or wine

It's my turn to serve and among the many choices I don't know whether rum or vodka is a better holiday drink. I'm looking for special recipes to make this delightful. Help!

Can't beat cranberry and vodka, pretty, tasty, and easy.
Wow, you have some really festive get togethers, don't you?

In our house it's wine, maybe a little sweet vermouth as an aperitif and if my brother-in-law's feeling ambitious, he'll make his fantastic egg nog. Sorry I can't help with the recipe, it's his secret, but I know it's killer on the cholesterol level, since it contains eggs, heavy cream and rum.

Definitely the rum.

Try http://eat.epicurious.com for recipes.

Blanche:
Serve both. Offer a choice of either rum with egg nog (make sure it is a good egg nog) or cosmopolitans. If you're feeling really special, here is a recipe for Jack Frost Martinis: 3/4 oz. peppermint schnapps, 1 oz. white Godiva & 1 oz Stoli Vanilla - garnish with a chocolate swirl stick or a candy cane. (Only one of these per customer, please - they will knock your socks off.)
The above are for the cocktail hour..if dinner is involved, then serve wine....
Did you know that alcohol is more harmful and creates much more morbidity in the human body than weed? I say skip the rum and make it a marijuana Christmas this year.

I think that overall more people drink vodka than rum, vodka can be mixed w/ just about anything. Also rum is a great second choice or if you are serving wine you could offer rum or wine, seeing as most people drink wine. Keep in mind you don't have to serve all kinds of drinks, ask your guests to bring their drink of choice.

Rum makes me sooooooo sick:(

Hot Buttered Rum:

Pour a shot of Captain Morgans in a glass coffee mug, fill with apple cider, micro for about 20 seconds, put a pat of butter in, shake with nutmeg

Definitel Go for the rum! Especially mixed with egg nog. I think of vodka more as a summertime booze because it mixes best with fruit juices than most other hard liquors.

Another big drink around Christmas for us are brandy old fashions. Can you say yum yums?

How about Hot spiced wine? It's great for those cold evenings and nice before dinner. You can get recipes or you can buy bottled spiced wine, heat and serve.

For a dinner party, I get out the old punch bowl and fill it with the hot spiced wine and float a few pieces of apple and oranges on top. It's always a hit.

Have a WONDERFUL holiday season!!!

Candy is dandy
but
Liquor is quicker

have a "wild and crazy" party babe

Or, wine is fine but whiskey's quicker. At least in Ozzie's world.

I always go with a nice wine. You can have eggnog with some rum. You know your guests I am sure so you know what most of them like. I always have some beer on hand. Then I always have a crock pot full of Wassill. A warm spicy cider. I do not spike it.It is great for those guests who do not wish to drink. They also have something special of there own. I am hosting a party of 20 people tomorrow night myself. That is my plan. I also have Kahlua, and some liquers on hand to offer. But for dinner I think wine is always the preferred no matter what the Holiday. You can't go wrong with that choice.

So what makes the best egg nog? Bought or made?

Ho Ho Ho Dec 12th, 2002 05:34 AM

Jules: What with all the pasteurization worries about raw eggs, probably store-bought....we have a dairy in our Midwest town (they still deliver milk to your door in glass bottles)that simply makes the best...stuff bought in the grocery stores just doesn't compare. Buy a few quarts from different sources and have a tasting party.

Merry Dec 12th, 2002 05:38 AM

Yes, but the best tasting is definitely homemade. There's no comparison.
