Holiday Car Rental on the islands

I am contemplating a last minute trip to Hawaii Dec 26-31 and am realizing that car rentals are going to be the limiting factor! Maui and the BI only seems to have them available at $200/day and Kauai does not seem to have any at all. (Did a little better on Oahu at $60/day.)

Does anyone know whether this is likely to loosen up closer to the time? Obviously not the easiest place to plan a last minute trip!

Hmmm. That's impressive. Kayak.com has the cheapest rental at about $190 a day. Ouch. There are other rental agencies. Try googling for them.

I guess I won't just pop on over to Maui after Xmas.

If the car rentals are this high, I wonder what the hotel rates are going for?

Hotels do not seem so bad. Everyone is charging their full rate, but the range is wide and there is still availability. Although fine with me, I had to confine the trip to Oahu because that was the only reasonable possibility for a car!

Check vendors other than at the airports. For instance, on Kauai, use Koloa, instead of Lihue airport. Taxi for $35 to get a $200 weekly rental. Hours will be more restrictive.

Good luck.

I have had the experience of not being able to obtain a car at all over the holidays. You should reserve one.

I am not sure if it is too late for you but we just returned from Maui yesterday. Before leaving, my wife went through Hotwire and got a weekly car rental from Alamo for $12/day. Hotwire is worth a try before you reserve something at a much higher rate.

Thanks. I was able to get a car on Oahu for $58 and have also found one cheaper on Hotwire. Still getting over the $200 sticker shock for Maui, but supply and demand!

On Oahu you can try Enterprise. There are 15 locations. Most have cars available (airport location does not have any available).

www.enterprise.com

Location: HNL

When the location comes up, you can change the location in the block on the left side.

The location at 609 Ahua St is closest to the airport. It says No Airport Service which means no shuttle from airport & they won't pick up up & take you to that location, but a cab will only be $7 or so.

There are several other locations close to Waikiki where they will pick you up from a Waikiki location.

mstraveler- Please post after you come back and let us know what happened with the car rentals, especially on Maui.

I know the SuperFerry just started running again from Oahu to Maui. Would you be able to take your Oahu rental car to Maui?

Try Priceline. I always get my best car rental prices from them.
