Hitchhiking in New England?
 

Hi, I'm a 23 yr old Kiwi guy and I'm wondering how safe it is to hitch around Cape Cod, New Hampshire and Maine as public transport is minimal in these areas in April / May when I will be there. Any tips for hitching? Thanks, Scott. <BR>

As far as I know, it is illegal for motorists to pick up hitchhikers in all the New England states. Moreover, it is definitely not safe. Some months ago, a young lady with car trouble accepted a ride with a very ordinary and decent looking fellow. She called her parents on her cell phone. They even spoke to the "kind and generous driver". It took days to find her, and you wouldn't care to know how she died or the condition of her body. I live in Southern NH and wouldn't think of picking up a hitchhiker. Or, even, presumably, a motorist with vehicle problems. In fact, I haven't even seen anyone attempting hitchhiking in years and years, and I drive 25 miles each way to work. Your best bet would be to budget renting a car or motorcycle. I would strongly discourage you from attempting to get around by hitchhiking.

Hi Scott, <BR> <BR>You wouldn't be likely to get many rides. Most people in the United States wouldn't think to pick up a hitchhiker. It's just not considered safe - for the hitchhiker or the driver. I agree that you should try to find another budget alternative.
