Historic walking tours in San Francisco?
I've been to San Francisco countless times but on this visit I'm going to do some historic/cultural tours. Has anyone tried Foot Tours which are given by comedians? I figure they could be good or tragically corny. The San Francisco City Guide Tours look terrific. Any comments?

I haven't been on guided walks, but have done self-guided walks. The best guide I've found is Daniel Bacon's "Walking San Francisco on the Barbary Coast Trail".

Haven't done that one but have seen brochures for Victorial House walking tours (wwwvictorianwalks.com)and it is on my list to do. Just picked up a book that you might be interested in although it is a self guided walk. Historic Walks in San Francsico 18 trails through the City's past. We found it at the SF HIstorical Museum (Rand Richards - Heritage Press) We have several other self-guided walking tour books which we love and often do them - Walking San Francisco (Falcon Guide - Liz Gans and Rich Newby) and Stairway Walks in San francisco (Wilderness Press-Adah Bakalinsky) SF is a great walking city because it is so compact. Live here and love to walk this fabulous city.

4 years ago, myself, daughter, a friend and her daughter (both girls were 13 at the time) took the walking "Ghost Tour of San Francisco" in the Pacific Heights area that began at the Queen Anne Hotel. It was a great tour. The guide did a fantastic job. He was not only entertaining, but very knowledgeable. Since then, I have seen him on the Travel Channel talking about this tour. I would definitely recommend it. I believe it began at dusk and lasted nearly 3 hours. We went at the end of July and believe it it or not, the temp. during the day got in the upper 80s, but by night it definitely got chilly and you walk uphill quite a bit. Anyway, we are going back to SF (from Chicago area) in July - any suggestions something a 17 year old girl (going on 30) would like to do? Thanks.

Every kind of walking tour of SF you can think of offered by SF Library for FREE--donations are nice however.
