Historic Taos Inn
Any comments! I looked at their website. Actually pretty neat. You can pick the room you want to stay in by looking at pictures of the rooms. Reasonable and 1/4 block from plaza.

Great bar and restaurant, lovely building and grounds, but the rooms leave something to be desired. Bathrooms are old, tiny and dark; the ceilings are low, the rooms on the back side of the property overlook dumpsters and the teenage alcoholics who like to hang out there; and they don't allow you to use the kiva fireplaces they promote. Lots of notes all over the rooms threatening guests about what will happen to them if they dare build a fire. I'd go back for a drink or a meal, but I wouldn't stay there again.
WOW!!! Left me speechless!!

Hopefully that was a long time ago and they cleaned up their act by now!!

Where would you suggest?
It was in 1999. Much preferred staying in Santa Fe and visiting Taos as a day trip, but that's just me.
Just checked their website and noticed that they depict roaring fires in every fireplace, LOL! I'd e-mail them and ask about it, because it was a rude surprise for us when we thought we'd have a fireplace in our room, only to find out that they don't allow you to build fires. What they also fail to mention on their site is that the rooms in the main building are located right next to and/or above the bar, which features live music, of course. Not exactly peaceful. Like I said, great place to hang out, I'd just avoid staying there again.
Which room did you stay in?
One of the "Courtyard" rooms (i.e., dumpster view) but thanking heaven we weren't in the main building trying to sleep while the bar band was playing.
The Taos Inn is a great place for drinks and appetizers. It has mucho character but I would absolutely never stay there. There are a myriad of marvelous b+b's and others hotels to stay in . Do some more checking. I could also make some recommendations if you like.
Please do make some recommendations! We would like to be near the plaza with reasonable costs. Thanks.
I agree with staying in Santa Fe and making a day trip to Taos. I liked Santa Fe soooo much more than Taos. The stores in the downtown square were cheesy and junky. Santa Fe has a much nicer downtown square.
We are staying in Santa Fe (St. Francis Hotel), going to Taos for a night, then on to Mesa Verde.
Jackie and xxx; I topped a couple for you. Some favorites are Hacienda del Sol, Mabel Dodge Luhan House, La Loma Plaza, Casa de las Chimneas. I think they all have websites so you can see what they look like.
There are also some chain places in Taos, inexpensive and reliable. Do a search on Google.
Thanks rj. Did some more checking. Casa de las chimneas is way too expensive. Inn on La Loma Plaza looks good. Didn't find Mabel Dodge - check later.

Also checked out some website from El Pueblo and Best Western Kachina Lodge. Any comments on those.

Thanks again
Jackie; Try Taoslink.com for b+b listings. Kachina Lodge is basically a Motel-- but is fine if you are not looking for a more aesthetic experience. The bar at the lodge was once quite the hang-out with much history. have fun!
I personally like Taos, a lot. I hope you go there and avoid the comments of the naysayers. If you have time to get down to Santa Fe, too, over the "high road" you will add to your good experience. Good Luck!
Jackie; I got the Best Western Kachina Lodge mixed up with the Sagebrush Motel. The Sagebrush has the historical old hangout bar/restaurant and the Kachina Lodge is near the road to the Pueblo. Neither is within walking distance to the Plaza. But you don't need to be.
According to my AAA guidebook, the following "chain" type hotels are in Taos:

Best Western
Comfort Suites
Hampton Inn
Holiday Inn
Quality Inn
Ramada Inn

You can check the web sites of any of these chains for info. And of course, there are numerous "independent" inns as well. I LOVED hanging out at the bar and patio at Taos Inn, we even saw Ruben Romero perform, but I'd recommend staying in a quieter place.
The Taos Inn was probably the worst hotel experience that I've ever had in my life. There staff was extremely rude from the moment we checked in to the moment we checked out. The staff their seems ticked off about something 24 hours a day. If you are going for a nice time that will make you want to come back to Taos, I would say go to La Fonda, they are much nicer. Taos Inn will just leave a bad taste in your mouth and make you glad to be back home.
The Sagebrush Inn is bar far the BEST place to stay in Taos! Especially the rooms with fireplaces.
