Historic/Older Home or Mansion tours in NYC
I love to tour historic or period homes and will be attending New York City this Thursday-Sunday. Are there older homes/mansions around for touring? I see that Gracie Mansion is only open on Wednesdays. I attended the Tenement Museum last time I was in NY and loved it. Any recommendations/suggestions?

The Frick Collection is displayed in a mansion built by Henry Clay Frick in 1913-1914 and the Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum is housed in the former Andrew Carnegie Mansion.
The Mt Vernon Hotel Museum is located at 421 E 61st St, and the Merchant's House is located at 29 East 4th Street. There are many others. |
Fraunces Tavern predates the county - this is where Washington bade farewell to his troops at the end of the revolution. And the food isn't bad either. The Morris-Jumel Mansion - near 160th St - is the oldest house in Manhattan. Check the web site fo ropening hours and special events.

Teddy Roosevelt's house http://www.nps.gov/thrb/index.htm
As happytrailstoyou pointed out, many art museums are in old mansions. Add The Jewish Museum, National Academy, Neue Galerie and others to that list. If you add boroughs other than Manhattan to your trip, add even more sites such as Wave Hill in Riverdale/Bronx (mostly garden, but building is historic too), Alice Austen house in Staten Island, etc. |
By the way, The New York City Marathon is this Sunday,so expect traffic and subways to be more busy than usual for a weekend.

I recommend a stop @ St Paul's Chapel near the WTC site. Washington's pew is here and this housed rescue workers in the wake of 9/11.

I am interested in the Merchant's House museum. I love old houses too.

I think I'm too late but the Morris Jumel Mansion in Harlem is the oldest home in Manhattan. http://www.morrisjumel.org/ If you're able to go on Sunday and like jazz, Marjorie Eliot's free Parlor Jazz on Sun. afternoon is a real NYC experience.

Try this link for a number of historic houses in NYC. There look to be some amazing ones. Also I have to second a visit to St Pauls. |
Wonder where the OP actually went?

This thread has reminded me that I would like to visit the Van Cortlandt manor in the Bronx again--I was there many years ago on a school trip
