Historic homes in Savannah

Want to go through one or two. Have picked out the Owens-Thomas house. Is that a good choice? Any other ones you particularly enjoyed?

Green-Meldrim is very good as well, but Owen-Thomas was my favorite. The restoration had not been completed when we lived there, and the contrast between the finished and unfinished portions was most interesting. I never did the Juliette Gordon Low house...was always put off by the number of Scouts touring, seemingly at all times. Davenport House, the restoration of which was the start of reclaiming the historic district from eminent "slumhood", was probably my least favorite.

When you visit Savannah, make sure to take one of the sightseeing trolleys. This will give you an interesting and informative overview of the city, especially the historic district, and will help you decide what you want to visit. The best place to catch these trolleys is in front of the visitors center.

Yikes! Make that "imminent" slumhood, not "eminent"!! lol

I can't recall - think it is one of the ones mentioned above - but I really loved viewing the home where Gen. Sherman stayed. And isn't there a (new-ish)book (novel?) out about a love affair twixt Sherman and a Savanna belle?

I had never even heard of the Green Meldrin house, so will be checking into it. I went over to Amazon.com and found the book about General Sherman. it`s called "My Dearest Cecilia" and readers gave it 5 stars, so I will be buying that too. So thanks.

Green-Meldrim was Sherman's headquarters. It was included in some of the trolley tour packages, so you may be able to see it that way, Pat.

I thought the Owens-Thomas House was better than the Davenport House which were the only two we went through.

The trouble with the houses in Savannah amd the reason that the Owens-Thomas is the best is that all these homes were nearly condemned by the time the restoration efforts began in the 50's. They had all been rental houses or cut up into apartments. The Owens-Thomas is one of the only ones that was actually lived in by the "original" familes up until the time it became a museum. The artifacts lying around are original to the house.

Please click on my name and see the thread "TRIP REPORT: Savannah and Tybee Island" for a detailed description of our trip to Savannah and more decriptions of the two houses
